Can someone help me find resources to learn about the Baptist faith’s claim that it originates from John the Baptist. I remember a tape once mentioning a book that addresses this…can’t recall tape of book title now. Any clues on the title of that book?
Thank you!

It’s my understanding that only a few fringe Baptist groups actually make this claim. The Landmark churches come to mind. The real origins are much more recent. Founded in 1605 A.D. by John Smythe of England (Roger Williams 1639 A.D. in USA), the Baptist Church, originally called Anabaptist, is a movement which seceded from the Lutheran Reformation and embracing the holiness of the Puritan movement.

Here is an amusing article about this subject from Envoy magazine “Ancient Baptists” and Other Myths:

Peace be with you all,

I think you are inquiring about “The trail of blood” by J. M. Carroll.

Peace.

Look at any historical documents before the reformation and you will not see mention of a Baptist Church. We only see mention of it after the Reformation. So how can this book you speak of be taken at all seriously?

The only reason the claim that at all is because St. John the Baptist started his mission before Christ. If they trace their roots back to St. John the Baptist, then by default they are older than the CC, which would make their faith the ‘true faith’. It’s a lie and no competent historian would believe it.

Landmarkism is the belief that Baptist churches and traditions have preceded the Catholic Church and have been around since the time of John the Baptist and Christ. Proponents believe that Baptist traditions have been passed down through a succession of visible congregations of Christians that were Baptist in doctrine and practice, but not necessarily in name. This view is theologically based on Matthew 16:18 , “…and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” and a rejection of Catholicism as part of the historical origins of Baptists.

Want to know the “RE-formed” truth ,oops I mean “DE-formed” truth, oops I mean “historical revisionist” truth, oops you know what I mean?

Read the the book yourself. Here is a link to “Trail of Blood”:

Some people - Baptists of cousre - actually believe the Baptists were established by (St.) John the Baptist!:whacky: I herd that in a Baptist church and had to bite my tounge to stop the laughter!

Baptists were founded in c. 1607 A.D. by John Smyth, not Jesus.

Even Baptists sometimes have to swallow the truth on their religion even if they sugar-coat it:

By the way, Ana-Baptists did NOT give birth to the Baptists, John Smyth did.

I’ve also heard that, but my experience has been that it is far more widespread belief.

Actually, the Anabaptists made the first appearancein 1521, origninating in the Netherlands and Germany, and have no really direct relationship to the Baptists. In fact, the Mennonites are today’s Anabaptists. The Anabaptists’ teaching respecting infant baptism was adopted by the English and Amercian Baptists.

Anabaptists don’t have much in common at all with modern day Southern Baptists.

I had an ex-Lutheran, ex-Catholic now Independent Fundamentalist Baptist tell me that Baptists were NOT “Prodestants” (sic)! I just ran a google search looking for the source she cited and came up with a whole page full. I can’t find the exact one but it’s interesting to note that only the Baptist think they are not Protestant. One pastor claims that they are NOT protestants because they don’t PROTEST the Catholic Church, they DETEST it. So I guess he would a Detestant? :whacky:

If it were true that it originates from John the Baptist then how will it measure up to the once saved always saved belief. Jesus has not died nor has he risen from the dead when John the Baptist was alive.

God bless
