On another forum I met a preterist (one who believes that all prophecy has been fulfilled, including Christ’s second coming) who also claims to be Eastern Orthodox and he linked to a video on YouTube by Fr. Hopko, youtube.com/watch?v=fz6DK7IRh0A. He claims Fr. Hopko is advocating preterism, and I was wondering what other Eastern Orthodox folks think of this. Do you believe Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead at the end of the world?

The Church is a hospital for sinners. Some are more ill than others, but we welcome all who desire salvation. Obviously not all in the Church have their belief straight on every point of doctrine.

We state as much in every Divine Liturgy when we recite the Creed.

I’ve never heard a Preterist claim to believe the second coming has occurred. I’ve always understood Preterist to believe most of what evangelical Christians believe is about to happen has In fact already occured but not the second coming. Did this person specifically say the second coming, or are you assuming that?

Full Preterism is heretical. Partial Preterism, on the other hand is in line with orthodoxy. Many Catholics are Partial Preterist.

Full preterists believe that ALL prophecy is fulfilled including the second coming. What you are describing are partial preterists.

That’s what I thought, but I’ve been told that Catholics are not preterists. The only difference I see is that Catholics don’t believe in a rapture.

Catholics can be preterist. They can also be eschatological Idealist. Futurism though, especially dispensationalism, is a heresy.

It’s possible for one to be a partial preterist, but it’s not possible to be a full preteriest. They believe the second coming has already happened, and that Jesus judged the living and the dead in 70 AD. They also believe that Jesus spiritually died on the cross. Adam’s death was not physical but spiritual, therefore, Jesus also had to die spiritually (Jesus was separated from the Father) to destroy Adam’s “death.” They also deny that our bodies will be raised and glorified to be reunited with the soul in heaven.
