I’ve gotten my hands on the January '06 edition of New Oxford Review. I’ve been a fan of This Rock, and have been looking for similar magazines that take an orthodox view of issues in the world. I heard about NOR and National Catholic Reporter and thought I’d give each a try.
While NOR purports to be an orthodox publication, they seem quite at odds with others I’ve always thought of as orthodox. In the current edition is an article titled “Hit Men for Opus Dei.” In it are stabs at Scott Hahn, Robert Sungenis, and Karl Keating. Now these three I thought were fine upstanding defenders of orthodoxy. It says that “Sungenis doesn’t like Keating, and Keating knows it” all within its attack of Mark Shea’s blog. Now I don’t know much about Shea (I’ve surfed the blog somewhat), but it seems the NOR doesn’t care much at all for any of what I’ve felt are great people that have spectacular ministries (I love Catholic Answers). It is a shame this magazine seems to target and attack what are essentially allies for much of the same cause.
Yet despite these attacks, numerous articles and notes in NOR speak from a strongly orthodox position. I enjoyed very much the article by Abbot Joseph titled “Your Final Destination.” So NOR is not without its high points as well.
So now that I’ve had a chance to peruse NCR, NOR and This Rock, any other suggestions? I’ve open to getting as much catholic apologetic periodicals as I can.
