So, I was roaming around on Youtube, looking for some Byzantine liturgical singing and came across this incredible video from Saint Elias Orthodox church in Ontario.

The singing, the chrism, the clamorous bells!

Can anyone explain what is happening to the baby & father in this video? We don’t have a ritual like this in western Catholicism. The bells kind of freak me out (but in a good way).

I’m not too sure actually. Maybe a confirmation/chrismation? I also think these guys are Eastern Catholics.

It looks like Chrismation or what you might know as confirmation. Those who are received into the Church are Baptised as well as receiving the Holy chrism (oil) of the gift of the Holy spirit.

This man looks like he was being received into the Church via Chrismation which probably means he was already baptised in the name of the Trinity in another tradition. Chrismation usually takes place immediately after someone is baptised. That’s how my baptism went anyway.

This does seem to be an Eastern Catholic Church, though I couldn’t tell you the difference since it looks almost exactly like how an Orthodox Chrismation would go (at least from what I remember of mine).
