I recently picked up the Orthodox Study Bible. The introduction is very biased against the Catholic church. It also keeps referring to the church as the church of the “new testament”. Last time I checked we are not a religion of the book. It makes me think that a former protestant wrote this stuff.

I also noticed that the chief steward mentioned in Isaiah 22 doesn’t have the word “keys” in it. The commentary overall is good but I’m not sure about the translation. The old testament is the septuagint, which is nice but the new testament is the new KJV.

Is this bible any good?

From what I remember, its KJV. If I remember correctly the notes were Protestant, with allusions to what Orthodox believe, supposed to believe, and for that reason some Orthodox were negative in their reactions to it:shrug:

The editors constantly refer to the way things are done in the “Orthodox Church,” the teaching of the “Orthodox Church,” etc. … The only reason to qualify “Church” all the time, as the Study Bible does, is to distinguish it from other religious bodies. But the result of this constant qualification is that the reader does not feel he is reading a Bible prepared by Orthodox Christians for Orthodox Christians. The feeling is rather that this Bible is designed to introduce the non-Orthodox to Orthodoxy, or else that non-Orthodox wrote the notes in it. *
 
:DHonestly, I DO NOT recommend the Orthodox Study Bible. It has been noted by Orthodox scholars in an edition of the Eastern Churches Journal that the content is hardly Orthodox. It smacks very much of the mentality of Protestantism that discovered Apostolic Christianity but wanted to remain anti-Catholic/Pope that is very prevalent among a good number of American Orthodox, principally in the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese. I only p(name removed by moderator)oint this mentality because it has been confirmed to me by Orthodox friends of mine. The company that published the OSB was formerly a Protestant publishing company. Be wary.

If you want some Orthodox commentaries check out Fr. Tarazi’s books available from St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press. 👍 Or you could always just read the extensive commentaries done by St. John Chrysostom, Origen, St. Jerome, and the gammut of Patristic Fathers. 😃

I think that’s the big reason our pastor has selected these bibles for our bible study. I think the commentary and especially the introduction have some flavor of protestant theology. 22 Isaiah, like I said, appears to be intentionally mistranslated to not identify Peter with the role of a chief steward.

I know that these are minor defects in the big picture but I wanted to know if there were more anti-catholic statements through out the commentary.
