We had a doctor from Romania move to our small Roman Catholic town, and he claimed we were going to hell because we weren’t “real” Catholics. Is Roman Catholicism a heresy of the Orthodox church? I have no knowledge of this what so ever and would like some enlightenment!

Some Orthodox do think that Catholics are heretics to this very day.

Do you have first hand knowledge of this, did you actually hear him say it?

I for one, can’t imagine why someone new to town would tell his neighbors and his potential customers they were hell-bound.

This tale sounds like an urban legend.

Why not? I have heard similar things from the mouths of some fundamentalist Christians about Catholics, including members of my own family to other family members. Some people are so convinced of their own rightness, they don’t care who they insult. They feel it is their duty to God to warn others.

It is my understanding that the Orthodox view Catholics as schismatics, not heretics per se…?

And Catholics view the Orthodox Churches as schismatic. Both claim to be the one true Church. It’s all very confusing. For me it came down to, “who has Peter?”. The Church was founded on Peter (Matthew 16:18). Only Rome has the sucessor of Peter. Your Romanian friend may be well intentioned, but I wouldn’t get too out of shape. Just ask, “who has Peter?”

Now the History of the ROC is well documented during the Communist reign.

What has been done to take Kremlim and KGB authortized Bishops into a new era? Obviously this was a major concern of the late 70’s and early 80s;

Communists were not even concerned with the ROC they were willing to lay their cards on the table to accomodate the Catholic Church. This is well documeted by the Jesuits in the Final Conclave.by Malichi Martin, And it certainly cannot be said he had held a bias opinion of the CC during the stituation of the jeuits with the catholics during this period?

God Bless Gary.

I could quote from pages of His book if one would like. in regards to the Vaticans Rand report on the Eastern Orthodox Chruch, So lets not pretend all is fine and well in Camelot!

What we don’t know is exactlyeht changed in this regard, The book are out the and well documented in regards to this period.

So how much influence does communism weild ovr the ROC today? I don’y know. But being it was a no issues by communists certainly sepaks volumes.

BTW this was a major issuse at Conclave 82 with Communism, marxism, ad the deline of the US Demacracy with was based on Christianity from the on-set. This took on a very diiffern look in caotialism as Obama announced we are “No Longer” a Christian Nation. In which case deomcracy is doomed for failure without getiing back to what originally was the reason the West was civilized.

Many issues. and I don’t mean to shine a light just on the Orhtodox. We have a major issues in the West. The Porpestants have taken this issue so far into the darkness we are left with few alternatives but to satnd together like it or not. And the issues which unite us as Christans are the common bond not the far end ecumenical council debates.

Why not? Is it because you’ve never heard someone come out and spout stuff like that in real life? Because people are certainly not shy about making such claims on online forums…

But the Orthodox rightly teach that the entirety of all bishops exist in the apostolic succession of all bishops equally. The bishop of Thessalonica has the fullness of all 12 apostles’ succession, the bishop of Constantinople has all 12, the bishop of Jerusalem has all 12, Rome all 12…they view things differently. I think the Orthodox tend to see that there were five patriarchates: Constantinople, Rome, Jerusalem, Alexandria, and Antioch. 4 of these patriarchates stayed together on the same course as one left and pursued a different course. They have a good point I think…

I agree this story seems a bit weird.

In any case, most Orthodox I know would say the CC is outside of the Church, but would refrain to comment on their salvation.

But there are some nut-jobs around.

If it turns out that the Orthadox church is the true church, you won’t be sent to hell. Jesus taught against judging others and God wouldn’t send someone to hell for being born in a family with the wrong religion.

Who is more deserving of heaven? Someone who is in the right church but condemns others, or someone who is in the wrong church and concerns about their own salvation?
