Hello all.

You all may be glad to know I have worked my way through some of my other beliefs, and seem to have reached some kind of faith in Christ.

However, now it is between Russian Orthodox and Catholicism… What is the divide over, and what are the major differences?

Thank you everyone for putting up with me.

The Akin article has an obvious bias. 😉

Instead of asking on a forum, my best suggestion to you, would be to speak to a Roman Catholic priest and a Russian Orthodox priest.

The fullness of truth will make itself known to you. 🙂

Christ is Risen!

Jimmy Akin wrote a nice article in This Rock magazine…April 2005 called Brass Tacks. Here is a link… catholic.com/thisrock/2005/0504toc.asp

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the link, I have read it - and there are good arguments. I have nothing else to say as it did not really put it in simple terms for me.

This is also an equally great suggestion. I will do the same.

Wow. What I have seen in that video is nothing even CLOSE to representing “an Orthodox perspective”. No way. I’m not even Orthodox and I see that.

A much more useful link might be something like this video, if you want to see how the Eastern Orthodox see themselves, not how Catholics see them. Particularly relevant are the comments of Elder Ilie Cleopa, starting around 3:45 in the video.

Dear Sherab0,

The video brother dzheremi suggested is pretty accurate as to how many Orthodox see themselves. But I would just like to let you know two things.

First, not all Orthodox share the exclusivist views of those Romanian Orthodox. Certainly, all Orthodox (like all Catholics) see their own Church as the one, true Church, but many Orthodox engage in ecumenical endeavors with Catholics, and do not necessarily see Catholics as heretics (though they are sure to believe that Catholics have error).

Second, you should know that the Romanian Orthodox and the Romanian Catholic Churches are particularly vehemently opposed to one another, so the rhetoric you might get from Romanian Orthodox and Romanian Catholics about the other may generally be rather harsh.

As brother Mickey suggested earlier, the best way to know the difference is to see for yourself. Don’t depend on a Catholic to tell you about Orthodoxy, and don’t depend on an Orthodox to tell you about Catholicism. Ask a Catholic priest about Catholicism, not about Orthodoxy. Ask an Orthodox priest about Orthodoxy, not about Catholicism. If you do manage to hear rhetoric about one side against the other, take it with a grain of salt, and be willing to hear what the other side says first before making a decision.

Blessings,
Marduk
