Mortal/venial sin
1 Jn 5: 16 - 17

"If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death in other words mortal] , he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death ***not mortal, i.e. venial ***]. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that. [17] All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death. "
  1. Here is the direct reference to mortal and venial sin. Even though the words mortal and venial aren’t there, Protestants can’t ignore there is a classification of sin in these passages. Besides, Mortal and deadly are synonimous. If a soldier suffered a mortal wound on the battlefield, it means he died from his wound. If they object to the terms, then deadly and non deadly are fine too. It’s the concept and not the words that are important.
  2. the phrase “***All wrongdoing is sin” *** doesn’t mean all sin is the same. And we see this in these passages. Protestants quote “the wages of sin is death” yet scripture also says "there is sin that does not lead to death" Since we ALL die, “death” spoken of here, is used in a different context. It refers to the death of grace in the soul.
  3. John says it’s okay to pray about the venial type of sin and it will be forgiven. And that’s exactly how the Catholic Church teaches. HOWEVER, notice that John says he doesn’t recommend praying about the mortal type for forgiveness. And this also corresponds with the Catholic Church’s teaching on mortal sin that they must be sacramentally confessed, not just treated as a venial sin would be treated. But THAT doesn’t correspond with what Protestants think.
  4. So one asks, where does the bible list “mortal”/deadly sin? By definition, any sin that can keep one out of heaven is deadly/mortal. So which ones are they?

Galatians 5: 19 - 21

Colossians 3: 5-6

1 Corinthians 6: 9 - 10

Matthew 5: 22

Matthew 15: 18 - 20

These need sacramental confession
