OT NT Parallels

I just LOVE discovering parallels between the old and new testaments ... or items in the OT that prefigure things we find in the NT.
Examples.

Melchizedek was the king and priest of Salem
Jesus was priest/prophet/king of JeruSalem
Mel. offered bread and wine (only one to do this, which prefigured the last supper offering.

Solomon was the physical son of David
Jesus is called the ‘son of David’
Solomon was King
Jesus is THE king
After becoming king, Solomon crowned his mother as queen
Jesus crowned His mother as queen

I’d love to see all of you list additional parallels if you know of any.

Isaac carried the wood that would be used to sacrifice him.
Jesus carried the wood that would be used to sacrifice him.

The jews used a hyssop branch to put blood on the doorframe to be ‘passed over’.
A hyssop branch was used to offer wine to Jesus as he was on the cross.

There are so many! It’s proof for me that God inspired the bible. No other book can claim this.

But my favourite…
The Israelites had to sacrifice a unblemished lamb, the day before Passover, so that God can save them from the oppressive Egyptian Pharoah.

Jesus is the “lamb of God” who was sacrificed, the day before Passover, so that God can save us from sin! (The timing of the crucifixion was no co-incidence!)
 
This is my favorite, more parallel ideas than parallel images.

"This command I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say, “who will go up in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?” Nor is it across the sea that you should say, “Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’ No, it is something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out.”
(Deuteronomy 30, 11-14)

and from the gospels:

"Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the reign of God would come, [Jesus] replied: “You cannot tell by careful watching when the reign of God will come. Neither is it a matter of reporting that it is “here” or “there.” The reign of God is already in your midst”

(Luke 17, 20-22)

OT, Joseph can interpret dreams and brings his family to Egypt to prevent their deaths.

NT - Joseph receives instructions in dreams and brings his family to Egypt to escape death.
 
OT - The Ark of the Covenant contains -
A) the Old Law in the form of the 10 Commandments
B) Aaron’s Rod - the sign of the Levite High Priest
C) the jar of Manna - the bread that came down from heaven

NT - Mary as the Ark of the New Covenant contains (in her womb) -
A) the New Covenant Law
B) the New Covenant High Priest
C) the Bread of Life that came down from Heaven.
All in the form of Jesus.

  • David leaps and dances before the ark (v16)
    Luke 1
  • Mary arose and went to the hill country of Judah.(v39)
  • Elizabeth says, “Who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” (v43)
  • Mary stays three months with Elizabeth.(v56)
  • Mary rejoices “in God my Savior”. (v47)
  • Elizabeth cries out in a loud voice “Blessed are you among women” (v42).
  • The babe leaps in Elizabeth’s womb at Mary’s greeting (v41)

The OT Eve was visited by a fallen angel, believed a lie and brought forth death. Mary (The New Eve) was visited by a good angel, believed the truth and brought forth life.
 
The Church and the Papacy…

Matthew 16:17-19
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

OT Parallel…

Isaiah 22:21-23

I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open. I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family…
 
The Israelites went through the waters of the Red Sea and Pharoah’s army is destroyed. We go through the waters of Baptism and our sin is washed away.
