Seeking unique, masculine, Catholic names for our son. Is Maccabee appropriate? Ben Sira is another we’re considering. Does anyone have a very old-school suggestion related to very specific Catholic teachings? We also like Saul and Solomon. Doesn’t have to be biblical but we would like it to be recognizably Catholic and somewhat uncommon. Thank you for your help!

Peter, James, John, Matthew, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius, Ciprian, Cosmos, Damian, Nicodemus, etc.

Jacob, Simeon, Isaac, Joseph, Aaron

I like Dismas (the good theif), Nicodemus, and Benjamin… But I may be a little biased about the last one.

God Bless,
Br. Benjamin, CRM

Gerard. Sebastian. Jude. Leo. Raphael.

Those are some saint names I don’t hear too often, although in Catholic circles Jude and Leo I’ve heard maybe a few more times.

Ambrose
Augustine
Ignatius
Xavier
Dominic
Benedict
Raphael
Clement
Cornelius

Just wondering, is this your first child? I would urge you to not be too “out there” with a name choice, especially for a boy. Imagine hollering it at your kid when it’s time to leave the McDonald’s play land. “Ben Sira!” - - also, is that recognizably Catholic? It sounds Jewish to me, as does Saul. I’m not sure you can have unique and recognizably Catholic.
Some recognizably Catholic-seeming boys names to me are:

Joseph
Francis
Xavier
Dominic
Jude
Anthony
Patrick

But these definitely aren’t unique. I personally would save the more unique names for a girl. 😀
