Anyone hear of these books?

Sure – some of them are apocrypha, some are gnostic writings, and some (such as 3 Maccabees) are accepted by the Orthodox Church.

Why do you ask?

Some of them are useful for historic purposes–to see how people lived and taught during the time period they cover. They tell a lot about the people that wrote them, either orthodox Christians and Jews, or heretical groups. Sometimes they corroborate the Scriptures, sometimes (if they are heretical) they will contradict the Scriptures, sometimes the content is neutral. None of them (unless, in a few cases, you are Eastern Orthodox) are inspired Scripture and to be considered, in themselves, a reliable norm for truth.

They are mostly useful for scholars or other people that have a special interest in studying them. For the rest of us, they are merely interesting.

The gospel of nicodemus was freaky! It talks about Christ descending into hell to liberate the captives. The gospel of Barthomew does too.

If I understand what you are saying without reading Nicodemus, Christ did descend into Hell. It’s in the Apostles’ Creed. He preached the Gospel, to liberate the faithful once the gates of Heaven were opened up after Jesus’ resurrection.

So does I Peter 3:18-19.

Also Acts 2:31-32:

he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.

The Gospel of Mary Magdalene is an Egyptian gnostic effort of the second century. She is married to Jesus and preaches to the disciples after his death about the secret things he is supposed to have said to her.

It is about 26 verses long and it is entirely :whacky: .

I printed off a copy from the internet. Never really read it.

The Gospel of Barthomew has Jesus telling the Apostles about the descent into hell after his resurrection.

The Gospel of Nicodemus goes more into detail, explaining an exchange between satan and a demon concerning the diety of Christ moments before Christ himself arrives.
