It has a blue background, but I don’t believe it turns purple during Lent, as it’s actually a subforum of a generic Christian site.

I think you’re referring to the .net forum, which I cannot stand for a multitude of reasons, I can almost guarantee all of which are my own. I will not post there. I was told by someone I respect very much, when I was first investigating Orthodoxy that online forums “Will put the devil in your head”. At many sites I have found that to be true.

I post at TAW.

Are we allowed to post the names of other forums? People seem to be avoiding doing so, so I am as well, but I have no problem stating the name if we’re allowed to.
out of curoisty, what do you find wrong with said site?

I should preface everything I say with the fact that I was there for only a short time reading. I never posted and never got to ‘know’ anybody, so I’m a completely biased outsider unworthy to comment.

But this is an anonymous internet forum, so why not go ahead anyway? 😛

Personally, I found far too much nit-picking, too much anger and bitterness (about what I cannot be sure, just a ‘vibe’) and not enough inter-Orthodox cooperation. It is nothing like the spirit of my parish, or any other Orthodox parish I’ve been to, and I don’t care to immerse myself in that environment. The worst stereotypes of Holy Orthodoxy are supported on that site, the accusations against us of ‘stagnation’, too much care about externals, inter-jurisdictional fighting, and ethnicisim are rampant.

HOWEVER, as I said that was only my very brief experience, and it is VERY possible that Christ has steered me away from that site because of a flaw in my character that would have been exacerbated, or something that would’ve come up down the road. It may be that such issues listed above are, as I have said, only MY issues.

In TAW I found a Community far more like what I find at my Parish and far closer, IME, to actual Orthodoxy, and while it’s difficult to have to ignore such an active forum devoted to my Faith, I have to acknowledge that I was told to stay away, by my brother and God both, IMO.

I sometimes visit Theologica at theologica.ning.com/. This is a site mainly for Evangelical including Calvinist although there are some Lutherans, Catholics and Orthodox there. Some of the topics are mindless. Catholic Answers Forums is a good site with lively topics and answers.

Aside from CAF, I also visit a Unitarian Universalist forum, a Muslim forum and a Wiccan forum.

I like to broaden my horizons.

Peace,

Seeker

Man sometimes I wish we did. I hate to let even 12 hours get by without checking the new topics and such. One can fall behind quite easily here and I have done so in the past.

I always enjoy there something to always be discussing or learning. This has been the best forum I have seen so far.

God bless.
Yes, it certainly adds to CAF’s ability to suck us in. 😛

I have found it useful to take breaks, though. When I take a week off here and there, I return to find a couple dozen of my subscribed threads that have had activity since my last visit. And yet, all of them got on just fine without me.

It’s nice to remind myself that CAF gets along just fine without me weighing in with my opinion every day. :o

I visit no other religion forums and really only found this one by accident. The other forums I belong to are related to electronics, music, and amplifiers (and if you think religious topics can provoke arguments, you should see some of the exchanges about electronics: tube vs. solid state, analog vs. digital).

What I like about this forum is that it is tied to other materials such the enclyclopedia and articles, plus the mods take on questions every week or so.

What I still don’t fully understand about this forum is exactly what gets people “banned” or “suspended”. Every once and a while I see a poster is gone, even some that I thought pretty reasonable, and I have to wonder what they did to provoke the mods.

Yeah, however I just don’t like the idea of having so many threads to read in one sitting. Makes the day of catching up horrible to me. Thankfully I can read very fast, but still, I do try to take a break, but have never gone more than one day since joining. I tried two days but it was not sucessful.

I find it is more enjoyable if I stay caught up on this.

It’s CAF’s conspiracy to suck us in. I still can’t figure out why I am getting email notifications to subscribed threads even when I clicked on no email notifications on my general settings.

God bless.

We’re not allowed to discuss it. To do so will get you banned. 😛

Yes, sometimes I wonder and sometimes I don’t. 🙂 It’s likely that whatever the offending post was got pulled, thus adding to the mystery. We all have bad days and can send off posts too quickly without thinking. So I try not to think less of our banned brethren. 😉

I guess you have more patience than I do. 😛 When I get far behind, I just scan to see if anyone responded directly to one of my posts and then move on to the next thread. :o

You’re still getting email notifications? Hmmm, that is curious. I started off that way but quickly realized that wouldn’t work. But once I changed my settings, I only get the occassional email of “Hot Topics” or other Catholic Answers goings-on.

Which is exactly why I am avoiding all the “gay marriage” threads today. If I said what is top-of-mind - I would probably end up banned.

Does the forum ever let banned individuals come back? Is there some kind of e-penance they can do? Or is it like time in the penalty box?

I found out, that I have having to go in there and change each individual thread to say no email notification. It did work for the new threads, but the old threads I am having to update. I am still in the process of doing so lol.

God bless.

“Know Thyself” is great advice for forum participation. 🙂 I know what you mean about avoiding certain topics that get the blood pressure rising.

I’m not sure if banned people ever come back. Usually, if someone just needs a “time out”, they get a suspension. You have to either do something more serious or be a repeat offender to get banned.

Of course, I don’t know if there’s anything stopping such people from creating a new user name and coming back. I’m not computer savvy enough to know whether or not such a thing is preventable.

I hope all this speculating is not against forum rules. :o

Ah! Well, at least now you know what to do, even if it is tedious. :o

I post regularly on several other Christian forums. I found this one because someone from one of my other forums invited me.
