Recently, in my journey of researching different religious orders, now that I am very sure that God wants me to serve him as a Religious Brother at some point in my life, I have come across several Franciscan Orders which dont seem to fall under eitheir OFM, OFM Conv, OFM Cap, or TOR. Their websites havent been able to fill me in on what I am seeking. Can someone tell me what order, as in 1st or 3rd, that these belong too:

The Franciscan Brothers of the Eucharist
The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal
The Franciscan Brothers of Peace

Thank you!

My guess would be third, but the best way to figure out is to drop em a line : ) and get the info straight from the source.

The Fransiscan Friars of the Renewal are 1st order I’m pretty sure. They are the group founded by Fr Benedict Groeschel. They have friars, which I believe means 1st order. They may however be a part of a large OFM group.

Thanks. Although I think the third order can use the term friar too, because the Third Order Regular (As opposed to 3rd order secular) uses Friar in their name. Thank you!

Lol I completely passed over them in the OP. Yeah they are first order. They are actually a reform movement of the OFM Cap.

They are a great group, very holy and intelligent. Fr Benedict especially just seems to radiate holiness.

As far as I know, all those initially listed are Third Order.
The First Order Franciscans are the OFMs, OFMconv and OFMcap.

But also the Franciscans of the Immaculate (FI) have been designated First Order and even more unsual, the FSI Sisters are also First Order–both of pontifical rite.
you can see at www.MaryMediatrix.com

They also have Brothers and Third Order members including new Third Order sisters. There are 4 friaries in the US and the motherhouse is in Italy.

Ave Maria!

Anybody have the answer and or know of a good website to get the information for habits, orders, etc? I’m trying to understand the actual clothing color of Franciscans. I read something that confused me with the color of their habits.

White,
Brown,
Gray,
Black

Now what do they call the habit?

What about Carmelites & Benedictines.
The Benedictines wore black where I went to school.
But I see Franciscans wearing black at our parish. They ar TOR [Friars].

I’m really confused. I thought I knew this stuff.

It doesnt appear that all the orders stick to the traditional uniform colors anymore. The TOR wear black, but most wear brown, FBRs where Grey.

From my youngest days through part of university I was taught by Third Order Franciscans. Great men indeed!

Most certainly! We are blessed to have men like them serving the Church.

The Benedictines still wear black; the Carmelites (both O.Carm. and Discalced) wear brown with a white mantle and, unlike the Franciscans, they wear a belt instead of a rope around the waste of the brown robe.

I there any practical difference between a First Order and a Third Order Regular?

Is the rule different?

Michael

Of what I can tell, the TOR is a more active order, and doesnt involve nearly as much contemplative ministry as OFM, OFM Cap or OFM Conv does.
