We started reading 1st Maccabees tonight by reading chapter 1 followed by discussion. Something very interesting happened. There is a strong correlation with todays society!

I would be interested to know what study series you’re using as a guide? I’m searching for a good scripture study series.

But I realized I didn’t comment on your original post. :o I haven’t read Maccabbes…how do you find it reflective of today’s society?

I just read it and I have to agree with you. Especially in terms of the secularization of society and the prohibitions against religion. Sounds familiar…

creole54-we’re using our bibles. Its just me, hubby and 17yr old son.

SMA_12-Exactly! And its kinda sad to say that as a society they were very complacent and the matter went crazy. I can see that happening currently to our society. Although the death they suffered is more. We will most likely experience a social death with ostracism and the like. I struggle with words alot so I’m not making very much sense, sorry. But hopefully since you did read it and noted the secularism similarities I haven’t confused. 😛

We are reading a chapter a week to ourselves and then discuss it as a family. Since it’s summertime, our church doesn’t hold the Wednesday religious ed classes. So we feel doing this will help us keep our focus on God until we get to Mass. I don’t know about you guys but going to Mass on Sundays is great but not enough. I work during the day, so daily Mass is out of the question for me. So I really need the calming effect of the church during the religious ed classes during the mid week.

Is there correlations in most scriptures?! I can’t wait to read some more! 👍
I’m not exactly sure what you mean? The bible is kinda like a 2,000 year-old model of “The Walton’s” series. It has has past; present and future connections and implications.

The “purpose” of the OT is to point to the NT where it is fulfilled and perfected by and through Christ.🙂

The entire Bible is one continous story.😃
