Is anyone familiar with the visions of Sr. Agnes Sasagawa at Akita? I know that the local ordinary approved of the devotion but don’t think that Vatican has chosen to comment on it yet. The brevity and urgency of the messages certainly have an authentic ring to them, as well as the emphasis place on obedience. Does anyone know what the status of Church approval on Akita is? If the messages are approved, why aren’t they better known amongst Catholics? From the VERY little I know about them they seem to be important.

EWTN has this:

At the very end:
Church Approves Messages, Weeping Statue As Supernatural
April, 1984—Most. Rev. John Shojiro Ito, Bishop of Niigata, Japan, after years of extensive investigation, declares the events of Akita, Japan to be of supernatural origin, and authorizes throughout the entire diocese the veneration of the Holy Mother of Akita.
On April 22, 1984, after eight years of investigations, after consultation with the Holy See, the messages of Our Lady of Akita were approved by the Bishop of the diocese. In the Japanese village of Akita, a statue of the Madonna, according to the testimony of more than 500 Christians and non-Christians, including the Buddhist mayor of the town, has shed blood, sweat and tears. A nun, Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa has received the stigmata and has received messages from Our Lady.
June, 1988—Vatican City—Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, gives definitive judgement on the Akita events and messages as reliable and worthy of belief.
Now I believe that in cases of apparitions, there is a standard by which first things must be judged as being supernatural in origin (can be good or evil supernatural) or not, then if judged supernatural good, the next step is stating (on behalf of Rome, after the diocese has investigated and forwarded the reports to Rome) whether the supernatural events are worthy of belief or not.

I believe that once deemed ‘reliable and worthy of belief’, then the apparitions are just that–reliable, and worthy of belief. No further need for ‘proof’, or infallible declarations. . .one can then, should one choose, freely take the messages as reliable and worthy of belief. . .

Would it be ok if I included a link to your trip report in a post on my blog? Ive never had the chance to go up there and see things for myself including take my own photos :o
that would be great. i have only good things to say about the Akita shrine, and Japan in general, and would be happy to share with anyone.
