You mean like some guy being nailed to a cross, then rising from the dead? Yeah, that would be at odds with reason, wouldn’t it?

More seriously, if all of Catholicism were defined as these rather unlikely apparitions and miracles, I’d agree with you. But please note that even the Church herself is skeptical of these, and investigates them thoroughly, rather than tries to exploit them.

As for Americans abandoning Catholicism, that doesn’t surprise me, either. I note that we’re also abandoning things like decency, courtesy, and even literacy.

It may not bode well for the Vatican, but bodes a lot worse for America, and a lot sooner, too.
 
I finally found the picture that I had lost. There is sort of a story behind all this. I didn’t find the picture until our family moved into our new house after 2 weeks of moving. Our family needed more space since the additions of our little girl and boy and my in-laws, so we searched for a new house. The last house we found was in a good location, had the space we needed, was overall beautiful, and … had a statue of the virgin Mary in the backyard. My wife & I took this as a sign that Mary is guiding us. I think non-Catholics and even recently new Catholic converts will not yet grasp this aspect of “Catholic culture”, but given time, patience, and an open heart & mind- they will find peace & joy in the realization of how the saints play a significant part in our everyday lives.

Thank you to those who prayed for the intercession of St. Anthony, patron saint of lost things and missing persons.

The picture is a painting by the late Ralph Pallen Coleman (1892 - 1968). God bless his soul. It was on the back of a quarterly magazine “From The Housetops”
 
I’m really glad that you were able to find your picture of Our Lady of Fatima or perhaps it found you. It is a very lovely and inspiring picture and thank you for sharing it with us. Where did you get the picture from (ie/magazine)? Can you provide a website? Thank you for sharing the artist name also. May God reward You!

 Let me risk sharp rebuttal and mention that it is stories like Fatima that keep many people who admire much about Catholicism from embracing that faith. We appreciate the great work the Chuirch does among the poor, its medical facilities, its dedicated clergy and religious, etc. But to have to believe the apparations of Mary, for example, is simply too much. Millions of us need a compassionate religion focusing on the mystery and majesty of God and the importance of faith in our lives, but are unable - in good conscience - ro accept the various 'myths' that still seem to remain so central to Catholicism.   Sorry, but that's a reality. Until both Catholicism and evangelical Protestantism understand that we are no longer in a medieval world filled with superstition many of us will remain big tent believers, certainly tolerant of others, but unable to go along with their beliefs. We work hard at balancing our deep faith with reason and reasonableness.

  Pew research recently noted that for every one who becomes a Catholic in the USA four leave Catholicism, and without the Hispanic immigration, mainly illegal, the Church would be losing large numbers. This ought to waken the Vatican and others up to the crisis Christianity faces.

Noone HAS to believe in private apparitions if they wish not to. The church does not impose that but leaves that up to the individual. But as you may already know, we aren’t the only ones to have private apparitions or hear God speak to them privately. Other Christians have this as well, altho they may not be as well known or publicised as much.

And of course it seems that all mainline churches are having their own problems with filling the pews. So it isn’t just with Catholics. But between you and me, it really isn’t about numbers any way, because filling pews doesn’t indicate the real church. It is what the church teaches, and whether it is faithful to what it teaches over many centuries…which describes the Catholic church.
