I’m looking for information on Our Lady of Grace. I’ve seen the statue so many times. There are many parishes named after the Blessed Mother under this name. Does anyone have any information about OLOG or can point me where I can find out.

Thanks and God bless,

John

This comes from the University of Dayton website:
Q: Where does the title, Our Lady of Grace, originate?
%between%A: The title Our Lady of Grace is of French origin. The title corresponds to what we call a miraculous image.%between% %between%The image represents mother and child in tender embrace (eleousa style), and is an icon of italo-byzantine origin which found its way form Rome to Cambrai, France in 1440. It is here that the icon received the title “Notre Dame de Grâce” and was and still is venerated as patroness of the city of Cambrai, also called “Cité-Notre Dame” (Town of Our Lady). Attributed to Saint Lucas, the icon of modest dimensions (35.7 cm x 25.7 cm) was crowned in 1894, and is annually carried in procession through the streets of Cambrai on the day before the Assumption (August 15). Our Lady of Grace has been witness to many historical events, such as the so called “Paix des Dames” 1529 which put an end to the war between France and Spain. The image/title of Our Lady of Grace is venerated in many countries throughout the world. http://www.udayton.edu/mary/images2/CambraiO_L_Grace1.jpg

The statue that is called “Our Lady of Grace” depicts Our Lady, standing atop the earth with hands stretched out to shower grace upon the faithful who would ask for her help.

This page has a lovely explanation of the image ans statue. At least it corroborates my idea of the statue and what I was told by a friend with a deep Marian devotion.

Thanks so much to both of you. The statue I’m very familiar with (have had one since I was a little kid), but I never knew about the icon. With one parent from the Latin Rite and the other from the Byzantine Rite, it’s great to know about both.

Thanks and God bless,

John
