Hello all,

I went to mass last night (Dec 10th) for a mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe. Because this is a large event, the parish likes to celebrate on the weekend (which is fine). But I was a little surprised to see that the priest was using the readings and prayers for Dec 12th on Dec 10th. I was expecting the Sunday readings.

Was this an error, or can the mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe be moved?

Thanks and God Bless

Hello all,

I went to mass last night (Dec 10th) for a mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe. Because this is a large event, the parish likes to celebrate on the weekend (which is fine). The celebration can occur on a different day.
(“Moved” is really not the word. The celebration can occur on a different day, but even when that happens Dec. 12 remains the feast of OLG).

However, it cannot replace the 2nd Sunday of Advent Mass.

It’s possible for the bishop to dispense from the law to allow this to happen.

I can see that happening, especially if it was a Mass late on Sunday (you said “night”)
Although I don’t know exactly what the parish Mass schedule was, it seems very reasonable to think that the Sunday morning Masses were 2nd Sunday Advent, but with evening/night Masses for OLG (did that happen?)

The bishop can dispense from it either for individual parishes, or for the entire diocese.
Therefore, the answer to your question depends on whether or not this happened.

In my interpretation even the pastor could allow this, but it would have to be a situation where the Sunday night Mass is added rather than being regularly scheduled. The pastor cannot replace the Advent Sunday Mass (on his own authority) , but he can have a Mass for a special group apart from the parish Masses.

Thank you Father,

The Sunday night mass was added just for Our Lady of Guadalupe. We normally do not have Sunday night masses at my parish.

What you say makes a lot of sense and I will continue to assume that everything was correct.

Thank you for making feel much better.

God Bless!
