Celebrated on July 16th

This is the patronal feast of the Carmelites. The Order of Carmelites takes its name from Mount Carmel in Israel, which was the first place dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and where a chapel was erected in her honour.

16 July is also the feast of the ‘Scapular of Mount Carmel’ On that day in 1251, pious tradition says, the Blessed Virgin appeared to Saint Simon Stock, General of the Carmelites at Cambridge in England, showed him the scapular and promised supernatural favours and her special protection to his Order and to all persons who would wear her scapular.

To obtain the indulgences and other benefits promised to those who wear the Carmelite scapular, a person must be invested by a priest who has the requisite faculties and must lead a consistent Christian life.

Prayer:

Lord, let the motherly prayer of the glorious Virgin come to our help. Through her support help us reach the true mount which is Christ. Amen.

Another prayer to Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the Flos Carmeli (Flower of Carmel) composed by Saint Simon Stock.

O Beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine, splendour of heaven, holy and singular, who brought forth the Son of God, still ever remaining a pure virgin, assist us in our necessity! O Star of the Sea, help and protect us! Show us that you are our Mother! Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, pray for us!
(from ICN)

For those who would like to join the Carmelites in praying the Liturgy of the Hours for the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, Patroness and Head of Our Order, the blog “Elijah’s Breeze” has the complete Divine Office propers for the Discalced Carmelite Order (Ordinary Form).

On the same blog, you also will find a page that provides the new Discalced Carmelite liturgical calendar, decreed by the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments on 16 July 2019.

New feast days were added, classifications of feasts were changed, optional memorials that once were celebrated globally were relegated to be observed by particular provinces, and names and titles of the saints and their feast days were regularized to create more uniformity. For example, “Saint Teresa of the Andes” is now venerated as “Saint Teresa of Jesus Fernández Solar” in the same way that Saint Mariam of Bethlehem, the stigmatist, is known as “Saint Mary of Jesus Crucified Baouardy”.

Happy Feast Day, everyone. Queen, Beauty of Carmel, pray for us!

O beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine,
Splendor of Heaven, holy and singular,
who brought forth the Son of God,
still ever remaining a Pure Virgin,
assist me in this necessity.
O Star of the sea, help and protect me!
Show me that Thou art my Mother.

O Mary, conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to Thee!

Mother and Beauty of Carmel, Pray for us!
Virgin, Flower of Carmel, Pray for us!
Patroness of all who wear the Scapular, Pray for us!
Hope of all who die wearing the Scapular, Pray for us!
St. Joseph, Friend of the Sacred Heart, Pray for us!
St. Joseph, Chaste Spouse of Mary, Pray for us!
St. Joseph, Our Patron, Pray for us!
O sweet Heart of Mary, Be our salvation!
Amen.

Also, the last appearance of Our Lady of Lourdes today, being celebrated virtually all day at Lourdes. Big Marian feast day!

Most Blessed and immaculate Virgin, ornament and splendor of Mount Carmel, thou who regardest with particular goodness those who wear thy scapular, benignly look upon me also, and cover me with the mantle of thy maternal protections. Fortify my weakness with thy strength, illuminate the darkness of my mind with thy wisdom, increase Faith, Hope and Charity within me, adorn my soul with the graces and virtues that it may be always precious to thee and thy divine Son; assist me in life, console me at the hour of death with thy most loving presence and present me to the most august Trinity as thy son and devout servant, to eternally praise and bless thee in heaven. Amen.

Hail Mary full of grace …
Hail Mary full of grace …
Glory be to the Father …

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us!

Remember that if you are enrolled in the Brown Scapular Confraternity, you can get a plenary indulgence today (July 16) for renewing your commitment to the Confraternity and meeting the usual conditions for a plenary (confession within 20 days, communion within a few days, be in a state of grace when you do the work, have no attachment to sin, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father).
(And you can get another plenary in the same way on July 20 for the feast of St. Elias.)

July is Carmel’s “month of glory” all month long. Between the novenas and feast days and dates of historic significance in the life of our Orders and their saints, we feast virtually every day. Today, 18 July is the 140th birthday of Saint Elizabeth of the Trinity. 😇 🎂 🎁
