Hello all!

I currently have a red Scapular of our Blessed Lord’s Most Holy Passion and His Most Sacred Heart, but in the midst of my consecration, I think it appropriate to get a scapular dedicated to our Lady.

The one that came to mind was the Black Scapular of our Lady of Sorrows. Do any of you have any info on this? The Servites sell one but don’t seem to provide much information on it.

Must one enroll in their confraternity to gain the promises? (“Take this Scapular. Whosoever dies wearing it shall not suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and pledge of peace.”)

Please let me know. I’m mainly interested in adding this scapular of our Lady of Sorrows, and/or the Passionist Black Scapular since I always carry the front piece of their habit with me.

I am enrolled in the Servite Confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows by mail. There are some prayers that I do daily as a result.

What are the Obligations?
The members of the Confraternity commit themselves:
  1. To wear the black scapular or medal of Our Lady as a sign of their commitment.
  2. To pray 10 to 15 minutes each day for the intentions of the entire Servite Family (friars, nuns, sisters, member of the Secular Order and the Secular Institutes, and especially members of this Confraternity). The Rosary of Our Lady of Sorrows is recommended, but other prayer forms may be substituted. For a just cause, this obligation may be reduced to seven Hail Mary’s.
  3. To pray each day at least on “Hail Mary,” “Hail Holy Queen” and the “Prayer for the Church and the Servite Order.”
  4. If possible, to undertake works of mercy, especially toward those suffering in body or spirit.
They may gain plenary indulgences, provided they fulfill the usual conditions *, on the day they join the confraternity and on the following feasts:
– Fra. Antony M. Pucci (January 12),
– the Seven Servite Founders (February 17),
– St. Peregrine Latiosi (April 30),
– St. Juliana Falconieri (June 19),
– St. Philip Benizi (August 23).

* Confession, communion, prayers according to the intentions of the Pope, and a renewal of the promise to keep the pledges of the Confraternity.

Do you know if it’s possible to wear the Scapular and still have the promise attached without enrolling in the confraternity?
I have no connection or knowledge of the Servites.

I received my fivefold scapular today (which, of course, includes the Servite), and the document* that came with it indicated no enrollments were necessary, only the option for investiture by a priest.

*I won’t attest to the accuracy of the document, though. It seemed to have some other known, outdated information related to the brown scapular, so I’ll be curious what we learn on this thread.

Still, having the Scapulars blessed by a priest is required, no?

There’s various opinions about it. I certainly prefer it, but as for required or necessary, the jury is out on this forum…

Gotcha. I’m going to go ahead and order the Servite one soon… it’s only $5 anyways. It can’t be of any harm to me regardless.

Scapular Indulgences

Plenary indulgences are associated with wearing the black scapular on certain days, for those enrolled. Others can receive a partial indulgence from wearing a scapular.

Promises and the Chaplet

Promises are private revelations and are not something that the Church certifies. However, the Virgin Mary apparition to Saint Bridget of Sweden (born 1303 A.D.) had promises conditionally associated with the devotion of saying seven Hail Mary’s and meditating on her tears and sorrows.

I believe that the black scapular has no connection with St. Bridget of Sweden. However the the Chaplet of the Seven Dolors (or Sorrows) originated in the Servite Order (founded 1233 A.D.).

Also, Our Lady of Kibeho (Rwanda, 1980s) in apparition, reportedly said to use the devotion of the Chaplet of Seven Sorrows to obtain repentance.

The Mendicant Order

The Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites) began after the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to seven rich and prominent citizens of Florence (canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1888) who decided to give up their worldly possessions and follow Christ, promising to honor His Mother in her sorrows.

The Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order
  • Saint Alexis Falconieri
  • Saint Amadeus of the Amidei
  • Saint Hugh dei Lippi Uggucioni
  • Saint Benedetto dell’ Antella
  • Saint Gherardino di Sostegno
  • Saint Buonfiglio dei Monaldi
  • Saint Giovanni di Buonagiunta

From Vico.

It is also part of the five-fold scapular, which I wear.
