Someone recently gave me advice to keep the Rosary in hand and said that Our Lady of Sorrows would be at hand to help me.

What does this mean? Is it meditating on certain mysteries? I only know there are 5 (I think). I am still a real beginner and just reflect on the Hail Mary, etc themselves.

The advice was to help me since I am suffering from depression.

Our Lady of Sorrows is the patroness of my household- Acceptance with Joy (Joy is not the absence of Sorrow, but the presence of God)

Anyway-
There is a rosary to the Sorrowful Mother.

From Seven Dolors:
This devotion was instituted in the 13th century in honor of the Seven Sorrows the Blessed Virgin Mary endured by her Divine Son. It is practiced upon a Chaplet made up of seven times seven beads, each section of seven beads are divided from the rest by medals, representing the seven principal sorrows of her life. The Hail Mary has to be said on each of the beads, with one Our Father before every seven Hail Marys; and at the end of all, three Hail Marys are to be said, in honor of the Sorrowful Tears of Our Lady.

When my third girl was only eight we almost lost her to appendicitis–she had a very strange case, with none of the normal symptoms, and by the time they got her into surgery the appendix had ruptured and peritinitis had set in. In about 36 hours, pneumnia followed, and she was in super critical condition for five days. I told the Sister in charge of the ward I hadn’t really known what fear was until I’d spent a couple nights just listening to her breathing and waiting for it to stop!!

Sister said “don’t you have your rosary?” I did, but as I told her, I couldn’t say it–I could not force my lips to utter the words “Thy will be done” in the Lord’s prayer!

She said “don’t even worry about saying the words, just hold on to the rosary and your desperation will pass right through it up to Our Blessed Mother, and she will work for you”.I never let loose of that Rosary for a week, and after five days my daughter made a sudden turn-around, and recovered in far less time that you would have thought possible.

Just to feel that Rosary in my hand was the most calming sensation…👍

It amazes me when people ask how I can believe in God when bad stuff happens, but I always find that’s when I need Him the most, you know? I relate to the kids in hospital thing, even though ours weren’t as bad as yours, and I’m glad that your daughter turned out fine. 🙂

Patience and Love, thanks for the answer. It is a great devotion. I have a copy of the Stations of the Cross from Mary’s perspective and it reminds me of that. It is easy to miss from Scripture alone, without meditation the great suffering Our Lady endured. I’m starting to feel a sense of closeness to Our Lady, but I can’t help feeling guilty still. I’ll get over it.

The seven meditations you gave are great, and I like your definition of joy.

First off, I cannot take the credit for the definition of Joy. I had to memorize it as part of the intent process to AWJ. But thank you. It has gotten me through more things than I can describe.

If it helps at all, my father (a convert 10 years ago) is still feeling guilt over the “mary thing” as he calls it (fondly,now) and has a hard time cultivating a relationship with her. It takes lots of time and lots of patience.

Think of her like your earthly Mama. You know your Mama loves you. Sometimes you have a hard time loving her back (esp. if you are a 10 year old who just got grounded 😃 ), but you know you love her. Does that help? I hope that all makes sense…

As a prot (and your Dad would understand this), there is only one “worship”, and it’s for God alone. So when I pray to Mary, it feels good, and right, but then part of me feels guilty afterwards.

“But we don’t worship Mary” I hear you say. No, but many Caths revere her. There is a special Catholic word for it that I can’t remember right now, but it is hard to overcome conditioning that you only have one “invisible friend that you talk to” ie God.

I am glad that your Dad can joke about it now. There’s hope for me.

And even as a cradle Catholic, I understand the verboten love of Mary. My DH is Protestant, and I get grief from his mother for Mary.
There is hope for you, darlin. And you’re in my prayers.
