My Question Is Our Lord Jesus Tilt Of His Head On

The Cross. I’am Seventy Six Years Old And I Have

Been Devoted To Praying To The Lord On The

Cross All My Life. I Was Altar Server In Grade

School And Throughout Life I Have Found That

Almost Ninety Percent Of All Crosses Depict Our

Lord Jesus Head Tilted To His Right Side. Is This A

Truth That Is Based On Some Fact Of Our Catholic

Faith?

Hi Bob… and welcome to CAF! Glad to have you with us!

In answer to your question. I searched the Gospels… and the only reference I could find to the position of Our Lord’s Sacred Head… when He died… was in the Gospel of John.

“When Jesus had taken the wine, He said, “It is finished.” And bowing His Head, He handed over the Spirit.” (John 19:30)

As we see… it doesn’t specify Our Lord’s Head to the right or left; To be honest, I have seen Crucifixes… and paintings where Our Lord’s Head is inclined, either way… but yes, mostly to the right.

I wish I had a better answer for you. Perhaps someone else will be able to come up with better information.

Our very old crucifix, which is also a storage for candles and holy water; the artist has Christ’s head to His left. An older metal crucifix; the artist has Christ’s head tilted to the right. A Crucifix from my grandfather’s funeral; the artist has Christ’s head straight on. Ditto for the rosary check. +++33/33/33 +++

Thats a very interesting question Bob, not that I know the answer to it. Never really thought about if it was on the right or the left but I just took the time to go through my house and look at the crusifixes and all of them have His head tilted to the right.

I will watch and see if anyone comes up with anything more than what MarieVeronica said.

I just thought of something, was the thief hanging to his right side? When you pray the Rosary with the Sisters and Mother Angelica on EWTN, (if you ever have), during the Sorrowful Mysteries they mention Jesus looking at the thief with mercy.

So, perhaps it is to represent looking at us all with mercy. Just a thought.

Of all the Crucifixes I’ve seen have Our Lord’s head to the right as well, expect for a Rosary I have in which it is tilted to the left.

I think that your arguments for this are specious. There is no definitive way of depicting Jesus on the cross. There may be a favorite artistic depiction when it comes to purchasing a crucifix in your family. I received a foil like depiction of the crucifixion, and life of Christ and wasn’t happy with the crucifixion artwork; so I replace the center with a Holy Card depiction. It didn’t have to do with the inclination of His head. I think that the original poster needs to refocus his thoughts, when looking at Jesus on the Cross!
