Our obligation?

O.K…the older I get the more I come to realise that the people we come across every day
are not there by chance(?) alone,God’s hand is in every encounter.As a shy person it is an effort usually to begin small talk to random strangers, yet so often afterwards I thank God for the big or small exchange that does happen.So often there are little blessings happening… for that person and myself…a smile,something in common,an opportunity to share in a wee way something about the faith.Is it then,our obligation as Catholics to make that effort(easy for some,difficult for others) and accept God’s gift of interaction? What God given moments we are missing out on by not making that effort!

If you are in the shy position, a nod of your head is sufficient enough. Some people will respond and others won’t–that’s how it is.

So, do not worry about it. If people were all the same, we would be in a mess, so thank God for the different personalities.

In all things open yourself up to doing God’s will. I’m a wallflower myself. I don’t reach out to others but I am always open to responding to them should they approach me. If I find myself becoming anxious in a situation where others are around I invoke the help of the Spirit and Mary:

“Come Holy Spirit, living in Mary, help me to empty myself of my anxiety and insecurities so that you may work through me to help anyone who approaches me. Help me to see with His eyes, hear with His ears, touch with His hands, respond with His heart. In Jesus’ name, I pray.” And while I’m waiting I’ll pray an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.

Because you are right, people who cross paths with you are being sent by God. Strive to embrace these opportunities to extend the love Christ has for you to others. It helps to remove our own egos and personalities from the equation.
