Is there any Order in which I would be able to work in developing countries without being completely cloistered? I know this is one of those very vague questions but I feel a call to religious life but I also feel a heavy call to serve the poor (which I think might outweigh my calling to religious life but I am not sure)

A related question: Can someone have two non conflicting vocations?

there is no inherent conflict. some religious orders are for those with a contemplative vocation, some are for those with an active vocation. the prayer of the contemplatives fuels the activism of the missionaries–that is why St. Therese is one of the patrons of the missions. Mother Teresa was both, and the hours she and her sisters spend in front of the Blessed Sacrament are the secret of their success. Her order would be a great place to begin your discernment. We of course will be praying for you.

Does the Missionaries of Charity have a place for men though? I thought it was a strictly sisters affair?

yes they certainly have priests, brothers and lay associates. just saw the video of her funeral, with her testimony–beautiful by the way, and saw them in action.

Thanks annie 🙂 you always seem to be about when I have a serious question.

I’ll look into them, the MoC have a house, sisters only, just down the road from me, I guess theres would be the first place to stop by.

Missionaries of the Precious Blood.
We have them here in Croatia, they are wonderful, very humble, open, true apostles. They also have missions in third world countries.
