The other day my husband did something really clumsy or sloppily and I said to him, “Oh, you are such a man!” His response was, “Gee, thanks, that’s the nicest compliment you’ve ever given me.” How I wish I’d bitten my tongue now! But I think part of him was also joking. I have (I think) said much nicer things to him in the past, but I also correct him alot, most especially with regards to raising our daugher. (He can be really aggressive and mean-spirited sometimes, and she’s only 2!) He likes for me to call him a man, but he also understands what I meant. What to do?

If you haven’t apologized, ask for his forgiveness and promised to respect him more fully in the future, perhaps that’s what you should do now. And pray for him, that he will be more gentle with your daughter, some men don’t know their own strength!

And, like CupofKindness says, remind him (gently! and maybe not at the same time you apologize to him?) that he’s the man his daughter is going to think is the best example of a real man in the whole darn world! So however he treats HER is the way she is going to think she is SUPPOSED to be treated by HER FUTURE HUSBAND…

I don’t really understand what the problem is. Were you playing around or being mean spirited? If you and your husband have an open relationship, you should be able to talk to him about it. Don’t fret about it.

I was being playful, but when he responded, he sounded like he was also being playful, but with a slight bit of seriousness, too. I shudder to think that he really does think that’s the nicest thing I’ve ever said to him, but now that I think about it, I guess he was just joking. I will talk to him about it though.

By the way, please be in prayer for him. He was in the emergency room today with chest pains. We don’t think it’s his heart, but God only knows. Anyway, he’s home now, but still getting mild chest pains. He thinks he had a panic attack earlier today, but he had no reason to be panicked, so it’s sort of strange…

Panic attacks can be caused by fear or repressed anger. For some women, they are hormonally driven. Is your husband under a lot of stress right now? If you’ve never experienced a panic attack, they are frightening and having an anti-anxiety pill handy helps a lot.
