Over all: Blue Bloods good for Catholicism or no?

I’m split.

In one sense I see this as a kinda “Ball Manifesto” - the handbook gay ‘rights’ activists followed to get the wide spread acceptance of homosexual unions. The show shows a family of Catholics not afraid to pray and rely on their Catholic Faith, at times.

But it’s a “Cafeteria Catholicism”; one minute Frank offers a dying mob boss who tried to put a hit on Frank, forgivness and even brings a priest to hear his confession…

The next they’re calling the Catholic Church “behind the times” when it comes to homosexual unions.

What’s you’re overall opinion? Good for Catholicism or bad?

I love it. It think it shows Catholicism in a good light

Overall, I think it is one of the very few tv programs that shows the Catholic Church in a positive light. They attend Mass, pray before meals and send their kids to parochial school. It doesn’t pretend to be a Catholic show, it is a show about Catholics trying to do the right thing in their world.

I was loving it until the same sex marriage episode turned me off. I wrote to the station but they never replied. No worries so many things to do for leisure.

I don’t know, I don’t have a horse in the race either way but I think the shows Catholicism in a good light. Clearly faith matters to the family. But they are also are in a political situation. Frank especially has to balance his secular, political work with is religious convictions. I see that especially in the early episode where there was issue regarding the New York Father he was investigating for sainthood.

I definitely think so. No, they are not perfect Catholics and the Bishop is a little bit of a caricature, but I think this is an accurate reflection of Catholicism.

My take is that I very much loved the first season, when the characters were practicing Catholics. Religion mostly vanished, and was rarely mentioned, from the second season onwards.

In addition to Selleck calling the Catholic church behind the times with regards to homosexuality, there was also an episode when the Catholic divorced lawyer (sorry, I don’t recall her name) had an affair. Never considered whether that might be wrong, or whether it might be a mortal sin.

In another episode the same Catholic lawyer seemed not bothered when her high school daughter let it slip that she was pondering whether to have sex with her boyfriend. Again, and these are both Catholics?

I was so excited and hopeful after the first season. I should have known better.

Well it’s a TV show. These are characters. Not everyone can be perfect examples. All people are sinners, no? Why should the Reagan’s be any different?
