Alessandra, to over-eat often indicates that a person is very unhappy about something in their life. It can be a symptom of issues that need to be dealt with. If someone is over-eating, have they deep sadness deep loss, loneliness? We can’t look at any overweight person and think, ‘that person is sinning’. That’s uncharitable and unrealistic. We can look at them and think" that person quite likely needs prayer. That person is lonely, depressed…whatever.’ Of course there may be people who are simply selfish or undisciplined. But in general, someone who is overweight is not dealing well with whatever damage, or stress, or sadness they carry within.
They don’t need anyone to hit them on the head, because many of them already feel guity, and instead of helping, that despresses them and they’re more likely to get worse rather than better.
Of course it’s not wrong to like, for instance, chocolate! Does anyone not! Of course, too, we need to be moderate, and put up their hands anyone who find’s that difficult. My hand is up! I’m lucky enough to mantain the same figure I had forty years ago! But if my husband didn’t buy the packs of dark chocolate when they’re on special and hide them in his closet, so I get one a week…I’m not sure how I’d go if I had charge of the stash!
I don’t know if there’s a pain hidden behind your question, but it could well be, which is why I’ve devoted this time to your question.
Moderation in all things…and there is an issue of various threats to life and health in overeating, which can be called ‘sinful’ in that we are required to love ourselves as God loves us…and to love those who need or love us and don’t want us ill or dead!
but anyone who is overweight…dear Lord please help them to overcome the underlying problems, please heal them…and give them the courage and love to give their energies to more wholesome possibilities.
