Over-focusing on the externals?

David Zampino:
I was trained in a very traditional, high-church, Anglican seminary. Upon converting, I had to (and continue to have to) try to avoid pious gestures, externals, etc. which “could” actually detract from someone else’s worship.

My (quite conservative) parish priest put it this way: If/when, God willing, I am allowed to celebrate Mass in the Catholic Church, I owe it to the faithful that I follow correctly the rubrics in the Sacramentary as they are given.

For me, this was very good advice, even though I still occasionally slip up!

Blessings.
I’m not saying “pious gestures, externals, etc.” are bad – they only become bad when they become the focus of our worship.

Similarly, they become bad when they are practiced even though they contravene what the Church directs.

I see MANY postings on these forums that push/applaud actions that actually go against what the Church directs – all because some people believe they know “better” than the Church.

It’s ironic that these very people are principally those who carp so strongly about “liturgical abuses.” Go figure.

Chalice, It’s proper to say… you are probably one of the most annoying people who post on this board. 👍

With myself coming in at a close second.

Is there a proper place to sign up as “Most Annoying Poster”?

Where is Divine Child? Is it like us?
Dearborn (Ford Rd and Gulley area)

It quite orthodox in teaching, having some great priests there. they do have EHMC’s and no communion rails and such so it differs in that respect.

It’s also one of the largest parishes in the Archdiocese. So on a ‘per family’ basis, SS C&M wins hands down 😉

Am I one of those people? I haven’t noticed anyone saying things like this.
