Does anyone have any advice for overcoming skepticism? As I try to grow if faith, I find that I still have the knee-jerk reaction to miracles in the Bible that they are somehow explainable by natural means (ie they just didn’t know about the placebo effect in the Old Testament times; people just shared food that they had). Part of me accepts that it is a miracle and I know that God could do it; but I certainly would have a hard time believing if God did a miracle in front of me! KWIM?? I pray to trust in God more but I hate that I still have such trouble accepting the wonders that God has worked! Thanks!

I have a rather more radical suggestion: develop your scepticism. Instead of clinging to what you believe in the face of your doubts, doubt your beliefs, embrace your doubts and doubt them, too. Live with the knowledge that you cannot actually prove anything other than your own personal existence, and accept the fact that you will be wrong ten thousand times before you die. Then say, “What I currently think is probably true is…”

As for miracles, I think that they all depend much more upon your conception of God. Does God exist? Does God have the power to perform miracles? If the people at that time thought that it was a miracle, do you have better information which proves them wrong?

You could try simple faith.
It doesn’t make much sense that jesus would perpetrate all these frauds to the point that he gives up his life.
Also, in order for you to be able to logically doubt then you must believe that God exists and is no deciever. This should be evident in the fact that you can know you exist (which is undeniable if you stick to the definition of existence). Thus you are also capable of logically believing. Think about the likelyhood of the skeptical arguments in your mind and the likelihood of the truth of the claims in the bible. Some of those tricks would be impossible to pull off for one man i.e. walking on water or calming the storm.

Hope this helps!

I have heard priests say that the miracles Jesus performed may not have been the way they were written, however I have no doubts that Jesus is God and if God created the Universe and all it contains, He would have no trouble with the miracles recorded in the Bible.

If you believe in the existence of God, and that Jesus is the second Person of the Trinity, then you must believe that He could have performed those miracles as it is written.

He still performs miracles. He said “According to your faith be it done unto you.” If you have a might faith, expect spectacular miracles to happen in your life!

AMEN

I truly believe in miracles! I have stress fracture in my right foot and I believe it is healing because John Paul II, St. Jude, St. Anthony, St. Rita, St. Ann, St. Padre Pio, St. Philomena, St. Theresa of The Little Flower, St. Dymphna, and of course St. Joseph and Our Holy Mother intercede for me to train strong again without fear.
My panic, anxiety, and depression made me feel suicidal.
I’m praying a novena now to St.Dymphna to ask Jesus to take away my fears and panic. I already feel less anxious about running, biking, and using the elliptical and best of all there is significantly less pain in my foot. Thanks Be to God!

I would also agree to embracing your skepticism and then really embracing it to the point of miraculous. IOW, everything is a miracle!

I have a convert friend who has a very scientific mind. One of the reasons he converted is because he saw the miracle in our sheer existence. He knows some outrageously high number of the chances of his particular everything coming together to form him. The odds of him being him (or any of us for that matter) was 1 in some huge number with an exponent of 1 followed by a million zeros. All I remember is that I never even knew scientists liked to figure that stuff out. Wow!

Miracles happen every day. Look for them and you will find them.
