We must all eat to live. But, If one lives to eat (and we’ve probably all had periods of gluttony when it comes to food) are we sinning? How bad of a sin can eating become if you think about food all the time and pig out whenever possible? I started thinking about this because for many of us (especially here in south louisiana) food can be quite a self-centered passion. ANy thoughts?

Gluttony is definitely a sin and overeating is one of its manifestations. If this is a problem you might want to go to confession and seek advice for conquering it.

Gluttony is most definitely a sin. Like all other gifts from God food is something that can be savored, appreciated and even loved. I know for myself it is definitely one of my weaknesses. Nothing I love better than a good meal… oops that’s the problem - There should be nothing I love better than God!!! So through sacrifice I prove this to God and help myself. Fasting during Lent, no meat on Friday and little sacrifices like denying myself at the grocery check out - which in effect has a double purpose, these little sacrifices I can offer up to God for those who need his help.

Proving how much you love God is very pleasing to Him. As a mother I know how pleasing it is when my children do something, not because they want to but to please me. How easy for us to do the same for God, and how great is the reward in return!!!

All for Love of Thee, my sweet Jesus!

Yes, overeating is a sin, partially becase our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit & by not taking care of our bodies, we are desecrating the temple.
I have just recently been thinking about ‘being nicer’ to my body by not getting candy bars, pizza, etc & instead changing habits to give my body what it wants instead of what my mouth or brain wants.

Overeating is Gluttony, but Gluttony is more than overeating. Any time we over indulge in anything, be it food, watching TV, purchasing nice things, spending too much time on the Internet, it is gluttonous.

I have found that nearly all of my sinful behavior is related in some form or fashion to Gluttony. I struggle with it daily. 😦

The only thing we can’t do too much of is praising God! 😃

Overeating is a sin, but eating over is not. You’re welcome to eat over at my place any time.

But note: As it is put in “Iowa Stubborn,” the second song in “The Music Man”: “You can eat your fill of all the food you bring yourself.”

Gluttony is definately a sin, but there must be made a distinction between gluttunous over-eating and having an eating disorder. Many people have mental disorders with food. I know that is not an excuse for anyone to pig out.

Are anorexia and bulimia sins? And compulsive overeating? It’s hard for me to say. They are mental illnesses. Depression is a mental illness. Is depression a sin? I would think not…

What’s your address Karl?? By the time I save enough money for the airfare from Melbourne to San Diego, I should be at your house for dinner sometime in 2008 👍
