I just came out of confession, and I had the weirdest heat attack. I started off confessing like normal, then about half way through I started feeling really really hot. For a moment I felt like I couldn’t breathe and also felt like I was going to actually faint. I pressed on during confession but probably mumble the rest of the way and the priest sounded confused at the end. I stripped off my coat and rolled up my sleeves and even lifted up my shirt a little I was so hot. I was actually feeling really weak after that. Was this a demonic attack of some kind? What happened?

How hot is it where you live? Does the church have air conditioning or has the heat on? Is the room you’re in particularly closed off?

Heat isn’t necessarily something demonic. I know St Padre Pio was really hot, thermometers would break because he was so hot. It might be a good thing. Obviously I wasn’t there so I don’t know.

I have never felt that before. The chapel was pretty heated, and I was in full long sleeve shirt and pants with a coat on. I really did feel like I was going to faint though and got really short of breath.

Yes, yes it did. I only lifted it up for a moment to my belly, but it helped me cool!

Alright, then we have a physical explanation.

It was probably really hot and your clothes didn’t help.

Go drink some water and maybe go rest in your house without clothes. Call a doctor perhaps.

If you were female it would just be a hot flash.

If you’re male it could possibly still just be a hot flash.

If it happens more than once, you might want to talk to a doctor.

Not really. I mean, I always have a little anxiety during it, but nothing I can’t handle. I’ve never experienced this before in confession ever.

It could be a multitude of things.

If you’re middle aged or older, or have any health conditions, I STRONGLY encourage you to call your PCP first thing Monday morning and get seen.

It could have been anything from anxiety to some sort of cardiovascular event.

Take courage. Even if it’s the worst possible thing, you know Christ, so death has no power over you.

Something I learned in the Military: expect and prepare for the worst, and hope and pray for the best.

So mentally prepare yourself for the doctor to tell you “boy philosopher, you’ve got less than a month before your heart fails.”

But hope and pray he simply says “it was just anxiety or a random event, no worries.”

Chances are it was anxiety related, or you were simply too hot for whatever reason, no biggy.

But brace yourself in case it turns out to be more serious.

Regardless, the very first thing you should do Monday morning is call your PCP - if you can’t be seen by your PCP this week, then go to an Urgent Care near you on Monday.
