Today’s holy thursday and my coworker has requested me to take his shift for this day so he can have his vacation with his family. ( We work in a coal-fired powerplant.) . Taking his shift would mean that I will be working today for 16 hours. From 8 am to 12 mn.

Do I commit sin by not being able to go to mass by working in the plant for a huge amount of time?

I don’t think Holy Thursday is a Holy Day of Obligation. Therefore, going to Mass on Holy Thursday would be good, but not going to it isn’t a sin.

Unfortunate as your circumstances are, the good news (besides He has Risen! 😀) is that Holy Thursday is not a day of obligation to attend mass. No sin committed.

Thank goodness. 🙂 I was quite disturbed of what I did. Choosing work over going to church.

Let’s look at this in two parts:
  1. Overtime - Overtime is normative for many blue collar works. That you are working a 16 hour shift is in no way sinful
  2. Mass Attendance - Holy Thursday is not a holy day of obligation. You commit no sin by missing mass today.
Take a breath. You are doing your co-worker a favour that hopefully he will return it when it is in your interest.

PAX
