Hello,

Recently I signed up for a half marathon. As a soccer player, I found that I have pretty good endurance when it comes to running. What started as simple 20-30 minute runs 4-5 days a week has become a hardcore training plan that involves me running 70 miles per week. I love to run, as it allows me to enjoy God’s beautiful creation along with giving me mental clarity.

However, I’ve started to realize that my days have become revolved around when/how long I will run. I plan my day around my run, which is usually at least 10 miles. I also stress about my eating, being cautious and making sure I do not overeat. I am a 6’2" 150 lb 20 year old male, so I do not believe I need to lose weight.

I’ve also developed sort of a complaining, bad mood character. I talk back to my parents/siblings and am much more anxious than I was a couple months/years ago. Not sure if this comes from growing up and the stressors around me, or if this is linked to my overtraining.

I continue to pray, attend Mass almost daily, and adore the Blessed Sacrament for an hour at least once a week. However, as I strive to be the best Catholic God has created me to be, I just wonder if this much training is a blockade to my spiritual life. I know no one here is a doctor/professional, but I would appreciate any thoughts/concerns/tips.

I get moody too when I am too physically tired. What I’ve learned is to not speak when I feel the angry rush. Let it there in me and say nothing. I don’t think it’s ruining your relationship with God, you’re just too tired.
Talk with a doctor and/or a nutritionist. Maybe you need some extra vitamins they can prescribe.
