Painting of Jolie draws notice (as Virgin Mary)

RALEIGH, N.C. - A North Carolina artist intrigued by the public obsession with celebrity has found herself feeding that obsession with a painting of actress Angelina Jolie as the Virgin Mary hovering over a Wal-Mart check-out line.

Kate Kretz has painted for 20 years but none of her previous work has garnered the attention given “Blessed Art Thou,” showing this weekend at Art Miami, an annual exposition of modern and contemporary art.

The artist thinks Angelina Jolie’s beauty is ‘unattainable’? Not in my book, she has injected too much collagen into her lips, has way too many tattoos, in short she reminds me of a slut. I am offended that she is depicted as The Virgin Mary.

I thought the puffed lips were inherited from her father Jon Voight.

I don’t think the painting is that bad. I do admire some of Jolie humanitarian commitment but I don’t recommend her lifestyle. She lives with Brad Pitt and remain unmarried.

I just wish they would marry so God can bless their marriage. John Voight by the way played John Paul II in the DVD movie John Paul II, the movie, and is a devote Catholic.

She’s twice-divorced and Brad Pitt is divorced himself - I dont think there’d be that much blessing going on even if they did marry.

Did Angelina ask to be painted as the Virgin Mary? If not then you should give her a break. She does alot of good work in third world countries, more than some of us ‘good catholics’ would ever dream of doing.
Because of her work she’s one of my personal role models and I consider myself a good catholic.
People need to stop and look at their own lives before judging others. Besides, doesn’t it say in the Bible judge not lest you be judged and let he without sin cast the first stone. Read your scripture.

The tradition of painting beautiful but morally dubious women as the Virgin Mary goes back to the Renaissance at least!

That doesn’t make it right, of course. In fact I suspect that this was one of the things the Council of Trent had in mind when it forbade the production of statues or pictures of saints that might incite to lust (not that, as an Anglican, I necessarily agree with the Council of Trent!).

I just don’t get why Angelina seems to be getting blaimed for what some artist painted. She didn’t ask to be painted as the Virgin Mary.
Sure, maybe she doesn’t have the best morals in the world, but she wasn’t raised in a Christian moral home, so what else does she know (and I will never believe that she’s an audultress). She does so much good work for the third world countries, pours so much of her life into that I feel that far out ways anything bad that she may do. I’m not God, so therefore I won’t judge her.
