What is the Papal Chapel of the Vatican Basilica?
Tuesday 24 December, Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord: Midnight Mass at 21.30 p.m. in the Papal Chapel of the Vatican Basilica.
That is part of the Pope’s schedule for next month. Papal Chapel is what it’s called when there is a Papal Mass where they go-all out with the music, courtiers, attendants, etc.–Easter, Christmas, and so on–but in this comment they are referring to a place inside St. Peter’s.

What is this place? Or is this probably a translation issue?

I’m guessing it’s a translation issue. I’m fairly familiar with the chapels at St. Peter’s, and I don’t recall a specific Papal chapel anywhere on the floor plan.

I’m guessing, since it’s the Vigil of Christmas, that they meant the Papal Altar in St. Peter’s (the one with the baldachin).

The only other option I can imagine being referred to as “Papal” is the chapel in the Grotto of Popes which is built into the side of St. Peter’s tomb. Mass there used to be reserved to popes only, but it was opened to all priests a long time ago. I’m not sure if maybe the chapel could still be a “Papal” chapel though.

That being said, if I’m to assume that the translation was really bad, it could also be the chapel of Pope Gregory, or Pope Leo, or the Sistine Chapel (even though that’s not in the Vatican, I wouldn’t be surprised — the translations are quite bad sometimes).

Do you have a link? There probably are French and Italian equivalents. I’m fluent in French and can muddle through written Italian.

The Vatican Basilica is St. Peter’s. It is one of four basilica’s ranked as Papal Basilica’s.

The Papal Chapel is the main high altar. It is “Papal” because one must have permission of the Pope to celebrate Mass on it. The main altar is in a chapel just like the other altars - its just a really, REALLY big chapel.

The other three papal basilicas are St. John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Mary Major. Each has a papal throne and a papal altar.

That is my understanding. I am open to correction.

The French says: “Mardi 24: Basilique vaticane à 21 h 30’, messe de Minuit.” That doesn’t look like it says what the English says.

The Italian says: “Martedì 24: Solennità del Natale del Signore: Basilica Vaticana, ore 21.30: Santa Messa della Notte.” Same as French.

For what it’s worth, if anything

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papal_household

The Sistine Chapel seems to be the Pope’s chapel and the Papal household, those who assisst him
Yeah, the Papal Household is made up of the Papal Family and the Papal Chapel. The Chapel is made up of the people you see in major Papal liturgical functions, like cardinals, monsignors, the Papal Almoner, etc.

I just have never heard of “Papal Chapel” as being a place.

That is an interesting take on it.
