I watched the Saturday Easter Vigil earlier this afternoon with Pope Francis and noticed a number priests in black in the front pew and was wondering who they are. They look to be Orthodox but I know there other Catholics in Eastern Europe and the Middle East who aren’t “Western” or “Roman”. Can you help? Thanks in advance.

Do you have a picture? They were most likely Eastern Catholic patriarchs or bishops. If you have a picture, I’m sure someone here can identify them for you.

No, I don’t have a picture but I was watching the Vigil on EWTN. Maybe if they still have it on-line we could see who they are. I was just curious. Like I said earlier I know there are other “sects” I guess you might call them who are not “Roman” Catholic but are in communion with the Roman Catholic church. These Priests were wearing black Vestments. One had a hood like some Orthodox priests use.

Like what was mentioned earlier, they were probably bishops of Eastern Churches in communion with Rome. There are 24 self governing or particular Churches that make up the Catholic Church. The Latin/Roman Catholic Church being the largest in number while the other 23 are Eastern Churches.

I would expect patriarchs to have rather serious duties at their own cathedrals on Easter . . .

I have a book called “The Eastern Christian Churches” by Ronald Roberson, CSP. It’s very interesting. I haven’t read it all but for a quick reference other googling it is pretty useful.
