When Pope Benedict XVI has Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica or St. Peter’s Square, there are only a couple chalices on the altar during the consecration. Where do the priests who give communion to the congregation get the consecrated hosts from?

I remember asking the same thing on this forum some time ago. I couldn’t imagine with the really big Masses that there would be hundreds of thousands of Hosts on the altar.

Those priests who assist just stand around or behind the altar, and when the Pope Consecrates the Hosts on the altar, it includes the Hosts they hold.
