Rather lightweight for a moral theology forum I know, but I heard an argument about this and would be interested to hear your opinions.

Is it inappropriate / disrespectful to participate in a sweepstake on the outcome of the conclave?

Not so long as all the proceeds go to the poor and all the winnings do too. :irish1:

Well, do you think its wise to possibly bet against the holy spirit? Sounds pretty risky to me.

risky business… should we bet with HS? I don’t think that is very smart or healthy… and if you do, for goodness sake, donate the money!

I think this is like the *Inverse Happy Days Principle: *“It feels so wrong, it can’t be right.”

or are you just trying to see if you can guess who the holy spirit is choosing?

I agree, do a sweepstakes, send all the money to a charity, soup kitchen, shelter, etc.

Then again, how would you know you were betting against the Holy Spirit? He can be kinda secretive about His intentions, can’t He?😉

😃 Now if Ed McMahon is involved, maybe it would be okay. Imagine if every Cardinal got an envelope…YOU MAY BE THE NEXT POPE!!! 😃

Of course if the Papabili were allocated by chance, one wouldn’t be betting against the Holy Spirit but rather allowing the holy spirit to decide which of the participants wins the money…

I.
Actually, the Election of the Pope is very much an act of Human Will. God gave us Free Will and He expects us to use it.

The Holy Spirit’s promise is not to Elect a particular man to be Pope, but to prevent the person Elected from binding the Church to doctrinal error.

Let’s face it, there have been some real jerks who sat on the Chair of Peter, all of whom were put there my men (at least once by holding swords to the throats of the Cardinals). But the Spirit protected even the worst from teaching error.

:rotfl: That’s just such a great mental image!

Wagering on the next Pope?
I BET most of the answers to THIS poll will answer ‘yes’.
