Parable of the Talents

Matthew 25:24 “Master I knew you were a demanding person, harvesting where you did not plant and gathering where you did not scatter”

Maybe I’m just over thinking this part, but what does this say about the master? To me this reads as if the servant believes his master is a thief who takes what isn’t his. Obviously there must be a meaning to it for Jesus to say it in this parable and the Parable of the Ten Coins in Luke, but I can’t seem to figure it out.

He’s not a thief. He harvests and gathers what his servants planted and scattered for him.

No matter IF that is what the servant believes…the servant seems to be trying to rationalize his decision to do nothing as if that would excuse his behavior. Just as happens today, people make up some pretty outlandish “reasons” why they were guilty of bad behavior, just look at what happens with people caught doing all manner of horrible things, including murder. The lawyer builds a case based on excuses if the evidence is overwhelming or cannot be disputed. So, to me, the servant is acting within character when making his remarks. However, the Lord was not sidetracked by his flimsy excuses.

The first time I read this as a child I instantly thought of myself as the third servant.

As I then read what the master says to him I realised I was wrong.

It worried me a little and from that moment I will make sure I am not that servant.

I do not reward for good results but for the patience and hardship undergone for My sake.
