I agree with having the equipment in a family room, and also letting them know that you can see everything. This might be enough to make them think twice about what they look at.
Thank you.

Thanks everyone. It sounds like K9 might be a good place for us to start, and it looks like I may be stuck avoiding images altogether for now too…
Hello, I recently stumbled across the fact that you can lock google safe search in the on position. support.google.com/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=3037047&rd=1

Don’t know if that link worked, but you can google “lock safe search”

We are just starting to look for parental controls, our eldest daughter is yet 6 and has just started doing some school work on the computer

Peace

Ok, here’s my professional advice: (And I work in the IT field) K9 will do you ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD! why? Your son get in trouble once, gets a talking to from Daddy, and that’s the end of that. But the next time he wants to do something he shouldn’t, all he does is turn off the speakers. Problem solved for him. Best thing to do is to devolpe a really trusting honest relationship. Most importantly, dont constantly remind him not to go searching for porn, because that will only make him more curious. I am a teenage boy, and believe you me, im serious when I say that. If he has already done this, it is reasonably easy to block certain searches or websites from the internet on any device in your house, by changing a few things in your router’s settings. But also be careful doing this, because if he really truly wants porn, he will find other ways of getting at it. also, and perhaps more importantly, the best action you can take is

DON’T. USE. INTERNET. EXPLORER.

IE (internet explorer) has been known to PERPOUSLY put stuff in search results that you dont want to see.

SWITCH TO GOOGLE CHROME. NOW.

then install adblock plus, and worry no more.

Best of luck, and I’ll pray for you.

We have used Blue Coat K9 Web Protection for probably over a year now, and it has worked very well for us. It is a very customizable internet filter. It categorizes web pages, and then you can tell it which specific categories you want it to block. Also, any time that you visit a blocked web page, you can override the block (either temporarily or permanently) using a password. (Just make sure you don’t lose or forget the password though, because you need it to change the filtering settings or to uninstall the software.) It also automatically forces YouTube’s “safety mode” to “on” and doesn’t allow it to be turned off, whenever you visit youtube.com. However, I notice that I can turn off “safe search” on Google image search, which I didn’t think it would allow. That might warrant some additional investigation.

K9 is not perfect. It will occasionally allow a web page that it shouldn’t. But it seems to do a very good job, and one huge advantage is that it is free for personal use. I haven’t used any other web filtering software, so I can’t really do a comparison, but I have been happy with K9.
Thanks for the tips.
