It is a common expression that:
“God created us out of pure grace, and we owe God everything, since all is His gift.”
I wonder, though, if this position is really balanced. Since God chose to create us, does He then bear a responsibility of taking care of us? I mean, would a parent say to their child,
“I, of my own free will, conceived you, and therefore you owe me everything.”
Would it make as much sense for the child to say to the parent,
“You generated me, therefore you owe me, at the very least, what I need to survive”.
Is God neglecting His responsibilities as a parent in allowing starvation, disease, etc.? Most people want to survive in physical security, and free of all forms of violence (physical, emotional, etc.). Isn’t it the parent’s responsibility to provide an environment where that occurs?
Some will say these things are imposed by God as educative for us- but if a human parent practised random violence, that wouldn’t be seen as a fair disciplinary or educative approach.
Does God, as our creator, owe us something? Does He have a responsibility?
