THIS!What about writing to your parents–snail mail or email? If they call you up to scream, you can immediately end the call.
Email them: “Dear Mom & Dad, I am looking forward to your visit, but I realize it is important that I tell you something before you come. I am Catholic. I know that I have asked that we not discuss religion, and I would like to continue with that. But I don’t want to keep this information a secret, and you will notice me going to Mass on Sunday when you visit anyway. I know you disagree with my decision, but I ask you to please respect it. Love, Darklight.”
Really, it doesn’t have to say more than that. It is email, so you know they’ll get the message, and if you aren’t sure (like if they don’t check their email), or if your anxiety will be too high until they reply, then add a note to please let you know that they got your message. If they don’t reply, send a text: Did you get my email?" Of course, an in person conversation would be best, but if you have already put it off for 2 years because of panic, it is better to tell any way you can, rather than the “best” way. Personally, I would even say that in the email: “I know this must be shocking, and I’m sorry to not tell you in person, but I have already put it off for too long because I’ve been afraid to bring it up, and this is the only way I could get myself to tell you.” But you can decide if you want to be that open about your feelings.
