As someone who managed a movie theatre for 12 years I can comment on a few things:
- In the summer of 1992, I was 10 years old. Over breakfast that morning, my mother read the newspaper and suggested to my father that he take me to see Terminator 2 because the special effects were cutting edge (for 92 at least). I was fully aware it was rated R and I wasn’t allowed those types of films. I confessed to my parents it was rated R and I wasn’t supposed to see it. They talked it over and felt that they could cover my eyes if it was risquee’. Plus they felt I was mature enough to know fantasy from reality. While they didn’t cover my eyes, during the film, they did try to plug up my ears during any F-word scenes. But looking at it from a 10 year old’s perspective, I felt slightly like an adult watching the film. I was also in awe of the special effects and even the story of a younger teen who befriended the Terminator. Afterwards, we ate at Burger King then they took me to ToysRUs and bought me a SuperSoaker100 for summertime, I was never happier in my life.

- As a theater manager, I’ve seen the gamut about what parents let their kids see. I’ve had some that at the instance of the slightest hint of a woman’s cleavage (even in a PG film), immediately leave and demand refunds. I’ve seen others take their young children to films that contain wanton, brutal rape (Last House on Left, Hills Have Eyes II). When I say young, I’m saying age 4-8 year olds. I try my best to warn the parents at the box office and it’s met with “they can handle it” or “they’re too young to know what that means”.
- I highly suggest to parents, www.kids-in-mind.com. This site contains all new films each week and breaks them down to reveal the exact number of profanities as well as violent scenes in a film on a graded scale. I can’t recommend it enough.
- Should you take your child to see Logan? If I had a mature 10 year old son who had seen the other films, and was responsible and level headed, I would go to a screening with him. However, if I had a 10 year old son who had seen the other X-men films but just seems a little too “childish”, I would not take him.
