Yup, that time of year again. I suppose we’ll go, but not really because I want to, just to let the kids see their friends and swim. Yes, I guess I’m a prude, but I really don’t want to see everyone in church in their bikinis and speedos. 🤷 😊
And yes, last year, there were way to many bikinis, way to many looooow cut one pieces, too many guys with too little fabric for their suits. Sigh. 😦 I didn’t swim last year, just wore a T-shirt and knee length shorts and sat with my feet in the kiddie pool watching my DD. This year both girls will want in the pool, so I will probably have to get in too. I have the most modest suit I could find, very high cut in front, back, and low on the legs…but I’m still not very comfortable with it. I really don’t want to go to mass next Sunday and picture Father in nothing but his trunks! Aarrgh! What do I do? Go or not?

parish pool party?

judging from some (though not a majority) of our sunday mass styles, i just couldn’t go.

i know we see those styles at the public beach, but not on our fellow parishioners. i don’t want to know who and which parishioners forget modesty at the beach.

ewwwww seeing people from church in their swimwear.
I really wouldn’t be able to look people in the eye again, especially if its at a pool like a few of ours in england where in the changing area there a communal part where (usually old) people decide to strip of and moisterise etc in front of everyone there ugh grossness

You have a very good point about seeing your priest in trunks, I mean you know their real human people, but seeing them in trunks…

Saying that, I think you should go. Everyones in the same boat…strut your stuff looking fab and have a good time. Seeing your kids having fun. Just don’t watch people when their walking towards the pool and getting in, when their in the pool you can’t see as much (oh wait, except the priest will still be topless lol)

You should go :extrahappy: (says the random person off the internet who herself would not go 😛 )

What about organizing your own pool party, with your kids’ friends and their parents? Anyone in your circle of friends who has a pool or pond in their backyard? Are y’all near a lake?

I’m European, so take what I say with lots of salt…

But I don’t get what the big deal is…

I saw my grandfather in a speedo and by grandmother in a bikini… and of course still respected them A LOT…

At least acknowledge that this unease is cultural, and not ethical. A priest swimming in his swimwear is really doing nothing wrong!

:o

Pope John Paul II was an avid swimmer, even had a swimming pool built at his summer residence.

Would you have said no if he would have invited you to a pool party???

I guess I just don’t get the problem.

Best to go and set the example for your girls that you can participate in these sorts of activities while maintaining your modesty. Well, you will probably set that example, but don’t count on anyone else to do so!

😊 See, that’s the problem! Oh well, DS really really wants to go see his friends, and DH will probably want to go too, so… 🤷
Yeah, I know, there’s nothing morally or ethically wrong with it, but still, it just kind of creeps me out. The kids will have enough fun to make up for my unease I suppose. They all love the water.

Maybe it will rain…

I agree with the post. I do wear a bikini to the beach (a modest one, there is such a thing) and I don’t really think of people any differently in or out of their bathing suits. To me, the body is just a body. As long as I don’t see what really should not be seen, I don’t care.

A priest in his swimwear is nothing. Wait till, after he’s blessed the ocean for the Assumption, he backflips off the boat! 😛

Yeah, it’s kind of TMI, but I’d go…I personally probably wouldn’t go swimming - that’s just not what I want my fellow parishioners thinking about in church…

Honestly, my problem would be with the immodesty issues more than whether or not everyone is in swimwear or not (lol, though I do see your point there :o ). I personally do not consider bikinis or very low/high one pieces modest, and don’t want my kids thinking that just because other Catholics wear it its ok, so that would be the biggest issue for me, and the ages of my kids would be a big factor, though in general I would lean towards not going (if indeed there are bikinis left and right in this Catholic pool party). I think it makes a difference if you are taking your kids to a Catholic pool party full of immodest swimwear vs some other public place where there may be immodest swimwear too. Aside from that, I wouldn’t want poor dh to be surrounded by immodestly dressed teen girls from our parish etc. If I knew everyone was going to be dressed modestly I would go.

of course I’d go if the Holy Father invited us to a pool party. I could count on the Pope to demonstrate modesty.

as for a modest bikini, SanctaMaria, I don’t wish to sound contentious, but can you post a pic of one? it sounds like a contradiction of terms.

I just have to think, that with all the opportunities, events, and ideas that a parish could possibly come up with to get together socially - why in the world would you choose an event where everyone is taking off most of their clothing??!!! 🤷

What’s wrong with a parish picnic? A bowling party? A hike in the woods with a picnic afterward? A bonfire party on a large piece of property somewhere? A trip to the local zoo with a cook out at someone’s home?

The options are endless, and none of them require you to be nearly naked!! Wow - what a concept!!! 😃

I wouldn’t go, personally. That’s not to say I would never go to a pool party, one of our best friends has a pool and we are there all the time in the summer. But a parish pool party - to me - is just a ridiculous idea.

Again, I’m European, so bear with me…

What’s so immodest about swimming while your stomach and back are visible? What’s so sexual about those anyway? 🤷

It’s an honest question, I really don’t get it. As I said, my grandparents swam in a speedo & a bikini, so it’s just normal to me 🤷

I’m not Sancta, but, I also wear a two-piece swim suit. Our camera is on the fritz, but, mine is a Nike athletic suit. The top is like a very supportive sports bra with a cris-cross back. The bottoms are “boy cut”. I always wear board shorts over the bottoms because they are the best swimwear God ever created.

My suit always stays in place, unlike one pieces that have shoulder straps moving and the back side creeping, I can put on my Nike suit and never make an “adjustment” no matter how many times I am in and out of the pool or boat.
