What do you think of a parish (which is the Cathedral) selling a dissenting newspaper at the back of the church?

Our parish sells a newspaper called the “Catholic New Times” which has articles which are pro-choice, pro- same sex unions, pro- women ordination. I was told, by the Bishop, that parishioners need to learn to discern the good articles from the bad articles, therefore, he won’t intervene the parish selling it. BTW, in his words the paper is “garbage”.

Thoughts?

God bless,
Debbie

There’s all sorts of stuff like that going on all over the country. There may be nothing you can do about getting it removed, BUT you can surely help bring in legitimate Catholic newspapers. Try to get the National Catholic REGISTER and have that available for parishioners too. If the powers that be say “no, you can’t do that!”, tell them if you’re going to have one, you have to offer another. Also, ask them why they are being intolerant of other people’s views. 😉

How ridiculous is that! Keeping a garbage newspaper available to people can learn to discern good articles from bad. Perhaps I’m off the mark but I don’t believe that’s the role of the church or the job of the bishop. I’d send a letter off to Rome.

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

Are you the only one who is angered over the situation? If not, try to get some other parishioners to help you.

There are many parishioners angry over this and they have just given up after bringing it up to the pastor many times with no results. I was hoping the bishop would be willing to do something but I was wrong. It may be best to send a couple of these papers off to Rome, with a letter explaining the happenings so far…

Debbie

In secular debate and dissent, it is said the best disinfectant is sunlight.

I don’t know the diseenting publication you’re talking about, but isn’t it better to expose these ideas than repress them?

I agree we should expose dissent, however, why sell a publication in the church that speaks against the Church. This would be promoting dissent as though it is an option for the faithful to be pro-choice, pro-same sex union, pro women ordination. It’s not as though this is an apologetics newspaper explaining that these views are wrong.

I’m sure you wouldn’t find anti-Baptist publications in a Baptist Church or anti-Muslim material in a mosque. Anyone who loves their faith would not allow it!

Yes if they are exposed as being wrong, but that’s not what is happening. For those who don’t know better, seeing such a paper at church is tatamount to the church’s approval of its content. That the pastor and apparently bishop have been notified and are doing nothing adds to the illusion of legitimacy of this paper. I hope they can either get it removed or have the paper dissected and have it demonstrated that the editorial content is contrary to the CCC

It would appear that they should also sell Playboy for the same reasons. 😃
