I know when you buy a rosary you have to have it blessed even if it was blessed before, since you can’t buy blessings. What if a blessed rosary was passed down from a family member? Does it still have to be re-blessed?

I couldn’t find a source to quote from or to cite (I did look online), but I believe that I have heard here from Catholic posters that one should have something blessed again when it changes ownership because it is assumed that blessings only apply to that owner.

This would probably be a wise thing to do, even if it does not seem necessary. This would also be a sign of respect towards your rosary, it’s former owner, and I suppose towards the Virgin Mary.

God bless.

A rosary that is passed down is a gift so therefore the blessing is intact…the previous owners indulgences do not remain however, in any sacramental when given as a gift.

You can give blessed items as gifts to anyone as long as it was blessed after purchase.

If you want to be sure it was blessed just re-bless it.

I tell folk who buy the rosaries I make that they are not blessed as we are not allowed to sell blessed things… at one time we had a dear old priest who came to the table early every week and blessed me and all the things on the stall… Used to tap me on the head with a gentle fist! Sweet memories. !

In the strictest sense, a rosary need not be blessed at all. Although the blessing make it a sacramental, prayers using a non-sacramental rosary are just as effective.

I have never heard that a Rosary “has to be Blessed”. Heck, for years I have said the complete Rosary on my fingers. I do agree that it is best to have it Blessed but it’s not a requirement.

If I’m wrong I’m sure that someone will correct me.

It does not lose its blessing if you give it to another family member or even non-family member.

Years ago, right after I converted to the Catholic church, my grand mother gave me the Rosary that belonged to her mother (my great grand mother), who brought it over on the ship from Hungary in 1880. That Rosary was truly Blessed. I could not lose it even if I had tried. It rode on the top of my pickup truck for 175 miles while I was returning from a hunting trip. When I got home I happened to see something on top of the camper on my truck. Sure enough it was my Rosary.

I had it re-Blessed by our priest and gave it to my daughter who was in need of it. She still has it after 15 years.

It’s not a very expensive Rosary but it is certainly Blessed.
