Nope, this is not a long-lost Jane Austen novel…but rather a question for those of you out there who have found your passion and pursued it in spite of major resistance from society. Even beyond parents and friends who just don’t understand…but with the knowledge that the world would be against you and your success would likely be limited no matter how well you did due to factors such as age, race, language ability, location, gender, economic status, introversion etc. How did you overcome the feeling that maybe the amount of pressure and hostility that you would face in pursuing a passion would just be too much to bear?
In my case, I have never been able to get excited about any career path due to the knowledge that prejudices against people like me are so great that I would have to face an uphill battle many times over compared to a more palatable person (however defined). I could never think of any job as a “dream” because the reality of to all that hostility means that any job will be wearing on the soul. The only thing that I can really say that I love with a passion is travel (though not in the jumping out of airplanes in Tanzania one minute, swimming with snakes in Lao the next kind of way…I like to go deeper with a few places rather that broad and splashy)-- and that’s not a way make money. The older I get, the less I believe that “bliss” can be found on earth. So what makes spending another ?? odd years on the planet worth it to you (especially if you do not have a family or other vocation)?
