The Peoria Diocese newspaper, The Catholic Post, ran an ad this week for the “American Passion Play”. It is held in Bloomington, Illinois at the Masonic Temple. I have been to the Passion Play and found it to be a wonderful, moving play. In fact, I have seen it several times. As I have watched it, I have found nothing that is contrary to Catholic belief.

The question is, since the play is put on in a Masonic temple and there are some masons involved in the play, how does the Catholic Church look at this? Our diocese apparently finds nothing wrong with it. This does not seem to fit with other threads about the Masons.

Any ideas?
 
Very odd it would be held at a Masonic temple.
Very odd that masons would actually be in the play.
 
Catholics are forbidden by the Church to join the Masons.
Masons do not accept cathoics.

It is odd that catholics would hold a religious function at a Mason hall.

It is odd that Masons would participate in the play.

These 2 groups are very opposed to each other. It simply doesn’t make sense.

As far as I can see neither of your two objections is enough to make that play bad for Catholics to attend.

First, many events are put on in Masonic “temples”: these are just halls or theaters that can be rented by any group, are they not? So I see no threat to Catholics arising from the location.

Secondly, the fact that some “Masons” are acting in the play means nothing, since we have no reason to believe either that such “Masons” are aware of the anti-Christian aspects of freemasonry or that they are even acting in the play in their capacity as freemasons. Many Protestants ignorantly become freemasons, so these actors may very well be acting rather as believing Christians. Would we disqualify the Jewish actress who played the Blessed Mother in the Gibson’s Passion
movie just because she was not Christian or Catholic? I think she did a superb job.

It seems to me that we should only look at what their characters say, unless you can give us additional details. I think that your diocese is correct.

I wasn’t arguing that it is “bad” or objectionable for catholics to attend.
I simply find it odd that someone somewhere said “let’s book the Masonic hall for the Passion Play!”

Doesn’t this seem odd to anyone?
 
Well,yes,it is a little bit strange,to pick that one among several other buildings.But the good thing is that everyone enjoyed the play.
 
When our parish was a mission parish, with no land or buildings, mass was celebrated in, among other places, a school, a Methodist church, and in the Jamil shrine temple.
