Me and my friend were watching a movie about Moses last night. He is a Non-Catholic Christian. It was at the part of the passover. He wanted to know why would God make them do something like put the blood of a slain sheep over one’s door. I was telling him it was a symbol of faith. If you believe and trust in God you will do what he says. (Right?) He said so if any one of them didn’t do it would their first born be killed? He wanted to know why God wouldn’t just know who had faith and who didn’t.

Simple. I’m just glad that your friend asked you. As a Christian, perhaps your friend has not yet been educated in the basics of the history of Christianity which, of course, began with the Hebrews (God’s chosen people).

This is to be considered in the entire context of sacrifice…

The passover of the Angel of Death over the lentils of the Chosen People who obeyed by slaying a lamb and putting the blood of the lamb over the lentils of their doors so that the Angel of Death would not kill the first born of that household was a pre-cursor in the Hebrew Scriptures (what we Christians sometimes call “the Old Testament”) of the sacrifice of the Son of God (Son of Man) Jesus the Christ to save us all… not just those who believe in Him.

beginning with Abraham obeying God by putting his own son on the stone to kill him as a sacrifice to God in a way that people killed lambs… and God – seeing that Abraham was SO willing to obey Him that He told Abraham that He was not going to require that Abraham shed his son’s blood after all because of Abraham’s faith is what saved his son.

God, being All-Knowing (among other “All-” things), absolutely already knew/knows about anybody’s faith. After all, He’s the one who gives it freely as a gift to everybody.

God wants us to acknowledge our Faith. Even “today” those of us who are living in an era of the world that is after Jesus’ redemption of us all – God wants us to tell Him that we believe.

It’s NOT for GOD’s benefit that we do so. It’s for OUR OWN.

And perhaps, if the subject comes up again, you can use this as an evangelization tool. Your friend should also be asking, “Why would Jesus make us drink his blood?” Of course, the answer is very profoundly linked with the subject at hand. It seems a Catholic understanding would do this person much good in furthering their faith. An aside: I’ve noticed that some people seem to think too much for their non-Catholic Christian faiths, and these people need to convert to a Church bigger than their head.

I have tried to tell him the correlation between the passover and the Eucharist. He doesn’t understand why God would have people use matter to “prove” their faith when God knows whats in our hearts. He was also asking like what if some of the people didn’t have true faith but they did would they were told, would God kill their first born for their lack of faith or pass them up cuz they did what he said?
 
God would do as he promised–spare their firstborn from death; but their lack of faith probably would not get them through the desert ahead.

God used matter because we are made of matter. There is a reason why God made us space/time creatures in a physical universe, and a reason why he became incarnate into that same physical universe. Ask your friend if he thinks that Jesus actually physically suffered and died on the cross, and if he thinks that is important. That in itself proves that God reaches us through matter, or sacramentally.
 
God used the on the doorposts as a sign, of course of The Sacrifice on Calvary. Why does God use matter? I don’t know, Ask him. But we do know that he uses matter to give us the Sacraments. We all receive the sacraments, but we don’t all receive the same grace through those sacraments, since we don’t all share the same level of faith in God.

It’s like the woman who was hemorraging (I know I mis-spelled it, just go with me on this) and touched Jesus’ hem. As His disciples told Him when He asked, many people touched Jesus as He was passing through the crowd. But because of the woman’s faith, power passed from Jesus.

Just to add to what has been said. This spilling of blood on the doorpost is a type of our salvation. As the angle of death passed through every household that had the blood of the lamb and were saved, it is through the blood of the lamb(Jesus) that we are all saved.

I think it’s because talk is cheap. You can say “I have faith” until the cows come home, but until you are asked to do something you will never know.
