Has anyone here ever been asked to serve on the Pastoral Council. If so could you possibly give me a head’s up on what you do?

I am an ex offico member of our Pastoral Council. The Council serves in an advisory capacity to the pastor. They are basically the eyes and ears of the parish. We did one big project two years ago where we conducted an indepth survey of our parish, people’s likes and dislikes about the parish, evaluating religious education, the school, liturgy and staff. We did it in conjunction with CARA at Georgetown. We took the results to work on new projects for the parish. The council memebers make suggestions and help to work with parish groups to implement the projects.
 
Thank-you, So more or less you help Father, find out ways that the Parish feels it lacking and try to help fix those problems. Find out what People like and don’t like about the Parish, etc. Does it require additional education in scriptures etc?
 
Parish council, at least the one I was involved in, was the coordinating arm of the parish for all the ministries the parish was involved in. Everything from liturgy coordination to food pantries to bereavement groups to faith formation. It is advisory and has as much or as little power to actually “do” anything as the pastor allows it.

No, you shouldn’t need any special kind of education for the council itself, though some basic business knowledge on how committees are organized and monitored is helpful. When active, they can serve as an invaluable resource for both the parish and the pastor.
